All good info. One question regarding lightning. I have been through some bad thunder and lightening situations while hiking, and Have gotten several methods. What is your rule of thumb….get low minimize yourself? How about when you are lying prone in your tent? Should you just lie there or will sleeping mat give you some protection from ground lightening! I saw the great outdoors with John Candy! I don’t want to be that person that attracts lightening! Ha ha.

Hi Rev. Great video. Looks like you know what you need to be aware of on the AT. There is gonna be a lot of area, usually blocked by trees, where you’re gonna hsve more sun exposure. There are a lot of widow makers. There also may not be many stealth camping spots. Camping may not even be much available around shelters. Access to water sources may be limited. Trail maintainers are still out there working on the trail and as time allows are doing work around the shelters. Not sure how much will be accessible by the time you plan to start. Ramdino does a weekly video on the hikers and the trail and has met with trail maintainers. He has also been out working with them on the trail. If you decide to hike it this year, when do you plan to start? Your knowledge is invaluable to other hikers. Wish I could get out there. Of course I’m the person who wall and furniture surfs around my house so don’t think I’d get that far, do you? Take care. Stay safe. And I’ll see you on the next video.

I have to say. I am 56 and I still sit up straight when you say so at the beginning. Hike on Rev. Your content has great value for all who carry a bag on their back.

Informative,… I love learning from your videos keep it up. I would love to have you do a beginning of Section A on the PCT video to help people get started. I think it would be ideal that you’d be there. Just the right guy. Keep it light. Otzi

I love your videos!! I plan on doing the PCT next year to celebrate my 75th birthday, provided my cardiologist gives me the OK. Like you I’ve had one heart attack, have coronary artery disease and occasional vertigo. So I really keyed on the medical video!
Taking this year to get as close as I can to thru-hike condition. Even if its only a few section hikes, it’s been my dream since Eric Ryback wrote his book! Thanks for all your videos and hope to see you on some of the California trails this year!

I follow similar rules. Like you I always carry a breathable rain jacket and trousers with me. I am frequently walking at altitudes between 1500 and 3000 meters, where it may turn cold quickly. Therefore I always include a fleece, a down jacket and long trainer trousers which I also use for sleeping. When hiking without tent I carry a breathable biwak bag weighing about 200 gramms. The extra weight of these items is worth the comfort and safety in case the weather turns bad unexpectedly.

Thank you. Your suggestions are appreciated.

Good video, Rev…excellent advice. I would just add one note to your comment about carrying an ice axe for snow and ice…learn how to use it! Although it is a bit of a lost art now, learning how to efficiently cut steps in a particularly dodgy spot, especially if only wearing micro-spikes, could make your life safer and easier. Also, how to self arrest in the event of a slip and fall on steeper ground is a skill worth learning….could make the difference between a bruised ego and a broken body! Keep it up…all good stuff! 👍🏻

  23. @geniesejamison1996 on April 5, 2025 at 2:22 am

Deeply thank you for the information .

  24. @Thedagoneman on April 5, 2025 at 2:23 am

An important point, you need more than just water. Water with some kind of electrolyte would be the best.

Loved the video as always. Beads

If you ever come back to Ireland or Uk a small collapsable windproof umbrella is useful keeps a lot of rain off you and can double up as a sun shade . Great videos and advice .

  26. @hikingwithjackieboy on April 5, 2025 at 2:24 am

    Some really good advice, Rev.

  27. @sherrierifenberg2199 on April 5, 2025 at 2:29 am

Hi there…have been in all conditions except desert…good advice on all these areas! TY!

  28. @edmegens6317 on April 5, 2025 at 2:31 am

Hi Rev, thank you for your videos. Inspirering and good for me getting out of the house hiking again. However, shoes. Many debates about shoes. You use trailrunners. I have experienced there are light walking and dry faster. But not in Scotland because the next rain shower wets your shoes. I am planning to walk the cape wrath trail. Little trail, lots of mud, rain and rivers to cross. How did you deal with that in Ireland?

  29. @washingtonfarmer2431 on April 5, 2025 at 2:31 am

Below freezing temps………..sleep with your water filter. On the trail, carry inside your coat or mid layer.

  30. @Eternalbliss4ever on April 5, 2025 at 2:34 am

Your suggestion are always helpful. Thank you for another awesome video.

  31. @charlesperry1051 on April 5, 2025 at 2:34 am

I am hopeful, probably going to be disappointed, that the LA fires will finally kill the enviroweenies and let the forestry professionals deal with wildfire prevention in CA.

  32. @LittleTalksWithMyles on April 5, 2025 at 2:34 am

I am good until my feet get cold, if that happens… I seem to spiral.
