Check out the. “haribo” power bank. Weighs as much as nitecore nb10000 & nb20000. Only costs $20-25

  2. @dannys7773 on August 17, 2025 at 1:29 pm

just bought 35euro sleeping back here in Europe (crossroad brand)… idk why in america they are so expensive…. confort rating to 5degrees C weight around 1kg and 2m long what more can you want why would you spend 250 on a quilt? quilt… and risk freezing when you cheap mat pop, quilts arent even that much of a saving weight over mummy sleeping bag
    just some new trend

  3. @jennalehocky8858 on August 17, 2025 at 1:29 pm

Hi Justin. I just unsubscribed from your channel after several years. My family and I started watching you when researching the Great Divide Trail. I miss your trip reports and your coverage of the Canadian Rockies and other mountain areas. I guess that you have gone another direction, seemingly exclusively reviewing gear with little to no mention of your location. All the best.

I found the versaflow in my research and i really don’t understand why it’s not talked about more.
Lighter and cheaper than the main options. Solid flow rate, has the nice window, and it has double water bottle connector. Only thing i wished is that it had O rings

The Costco Cascade mountain poles come in 2 types… 1. carbon fiber and 2. Aluminum. I like the lightweight carbon fibers poles and on sale i pick up a few pairs each year for like $30 CAD! However i tend to break them easily when we are hiking in steep rocky areas, and for those type of hikes I would say to go for the aluminum as they last much longer and dont snap at the tips as easily, even if they are a little heavier.

I love that tent. As a parent of two kids in scouts and as a leader myself we’ve used three of those tents for a few years and love them. They stuff down into a small stuff sack and weigh very little verses the price. Love them. Finally nice to see someone else promote this tent.

  7. @precisionpw on August 17, 2025 at 1:36 pm

Just did my first backpacking trip ever! I live in Alberta so I went on a 5 day hike in Banff. I followed the moose meadows trail to the ink pots, which then leads me up the Johnston Creek to Luellen Lake. I decided not to go through the Johnstone canyon due to how busy it is in summer. All of my gear tips have come from watching your videos. I just wanted to say thank you for the inspiration! This trip a friend and I shared a tent, but I will be upgrading gear as I can. Many more trips to come!

For me, the best value quilt is the Aegismax Wind Hard 2. It’s 750g in long size with 800FP down, and I’ve slept in it at -3 degrees Celsius, very warm. When it was on sale, I paid $150.
I share my opinion on the Nitecore headlamp and the Fire Maple cooking systems. I have the Petrel G3 with the Polaris stove because it has a pressure regulator.

I recently took a backpacking trip to Colorado with the 70l forclaz mt100. And made the rookie mistake of packing way too much food because we were so out of practice and it was a long trip. Long story short from a 31 pound base weight I was carrying 51 pounds in total. Which is not nice to move or pick up and this pack carried it like it was 30lbs. At 105$ on sale and how many features it has with that quality is is definitely the best.

  10. @crstarkey on August 17, 2025 at 1:38 pm

Did you say that the pink spoon will help keep you warm? Interesting. Okay, I like the thicker pillow and I use a 10" bamboo spoon. It’s light, strong, cleans easy, and is about $1.50. I think all this is great for low mileage trips. Smart to spend more on the sleep system. Nothing kills fun like being uncomfortable.

  11. @catblue6393 on August 17, 2025 at 1:39 pm

Good video! This will help new campers get started. Also, check hiker boxes at hostels, etc, for free cast offs that might help you.

  12. @kevineriksson6828 on August 17, 2025 at 1:39 pm

Would the Neve Waratah Quilt be better then the Rock Front UL 400?

  13. @sirforsa on August 17, 2025 at 1:40 pm

The way you say "backpack" reminds me of Mars Attacks. You know, with the aliens and stuff.

  14. @wanderingwithwendy on August 17, 2025 at 1:40 pm

I have the Mongar 2 in purple and I think it’s actually one of my favourite tents!

  15. @Thexaios on August 17, 2025 at 1:40 pm

I prefer sleeping with a blue titanium spoon in the summer to help keep me cool.

  16. @Edthebass on August 17, 2025 at 1:43 pm

What’s the R value of the pink titanium spoon?

  17. @mikeoverway6587 on August 17, 2025 at 1:45 pm

First view? what an honor! Appreciate your work Justin, keep it up!

  18. @Berttheturt314 on August 17, 2025 at 1:45 pm

IMO if you want a cheap shelter and aren’t going in really cold months, a relatively lightweight hammock (with tarp and suspension) would be around/under $50. Only downside is that underquilts can ve expensive, but it can give you better sleep

  19. @JoseyWales-ed on August 17, 2025 at 1:46 pm

If you do t have to buy everything in a hurry all at once and aren’t picky about color just keep an eye out. I check out a handful of different sites and wait for quality items on my list to go on sale. It has taken a couple years but I got all quality gear for between 50-70 percent off. Take care Just in

  20. @LilCripplingAnxiety on August 17, 2025 at 1:48 pm

Your pronunciation of Waratah was hilarious. it’s pronounce Wore-ah-tah, maybe give it a google you’ll get it. It’s the state flower of the state of New South Wales, Australia. Neve gear is run by Ryan who also runs my local B&M ultralight store in Sydney. Much love from Sydney!

  21. @heartattackhiker3527 on August 17, 2025 at 1:51 pm

My trekology always needs reflation a couple times a night. Buying something different soon.

  22. @endmp25 on August 17, 2025 at 1:53 pm

MT100 was my first backpack. As I evolved it’s my “go to”for friends to borrow. It can adapt to suit people in different sizes and shapes. I also bought the blue one too for my wife.

  23. @ammonc6252 on August 17, 2025 at 1:55 pm

This is such a good video. I wish I had seen it before buying a lot of my gear, and spending far too much on it all. Justin clearly understands backpacking and is the real deal!

  24. @salamanderGhost on August 17, 2025 at 1:56 pm

4:35 I was able to get an entire Zenbivy setup for under $200 with their recent sales on past generations. Also, I don’t know anyone in the northern U.S. that is backpacking during sub-freezing temps in the winter. A ZB 40 degree is fine with a well insulated mat like a OneTigris, also under $100. That’s my sleep system currently.

  25. @JakobVdv2000 on August 17, 2025 at 1:58 pm

Justin could you take a look at featherstone gear and kilosgear?

  26. @FrostyMcFrostface on August 17, 2025 at 1:58 pm

I REALLY lucked out and got a brand new unused Crux 1p for $60CAD from FB marketplace. I’ll be using it in anger shortly.
I recently moved back to Canada from Europe but stupidly left all of my bike touring camping gear there🙄 (Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 amongst other high-end stuff). I refuse to fork out all over again for big names after taking up back country hiking here. I really do miss my Trangia war horse, but that’s sentimental and a new one just wouldn’t be the same! Cheap canister stove it will be for now.
Thanks very much indeed for this helpful info!!

  27. @Vroosk on August 17, 2025 at 1:59 pm

Love it, perfect for getting into backpacking
Any reason you chose the Mongar 2 over the newest Mongar UL ?

  28. @ryanhooper4660 on August 17, 2025 at 1:59 pm

I must have missed it, how much does this setup weigh and cost in the end?

  29. @bastogne315 on August 17, 2025 at 2:01 pm

U can get bping gear for free…just nick it from other hikers.

  30. @Andy-Mesa on August 17, 2025 at 2:03 pm

I used the Veektomx for a year and was very happy with it, but I’ve since switched to the INIU P50-E1 which is slightly lighter, has an extra usable port, and charges faster. Both great options though, the Veektomx has slightly more capacity (like ~1 watt hour).

  31. @scottyplug on August 17, 2025 at 2:04 pm

Good stuff as always, J Money.

  32. @theoa8303 on August 17, 2025 at 2:05 pm

that’s nice vid with strong options here! however, I’d recommend another one based on quality/value instead of "cheap" to make the gears more profitable and sustainable in our practice 😉

  33. @MikeHacker on August 17, 2025 at 2:05 pm

Dry poop doesn’t smell but wet poop 💩 stinks

  34. @davidcooper8390 on August 17, 2025 at 2:06 pm

Wow, those are some great ideas to get you started. I have the Firemaple Greenpeak stove and Petrel G3 pot and they are high quality.

  35. @ghno88 on August 17, 2025 at 2:07 pm

I wish that sleeping pad was actually $70 lol

  36. @TraceyWalker-c5e on August 17, 2025 at 2:11 pm

My pillow of choice and use most is the Therm-a-rest cinch pillow. But if im hurting for space, I’ll use the Decathlon inflatable pillow. I take out the bladder and put my puffy jacket in place of it.

  37. @Zacs22 on August 17, 2025 at 2:17 pm

Awesome to see someone mention Neve gear outside of Australia love them so much

  38. @HighLakesUtah on August 17, 2025 at 2:18 pm

I didn’t know pink spoons would keep me warm at night and make food taste better lol.

  39. @stormykinz2482 on August 17, 2025 at 2:19 pm

Great video! Watched it all already

  40. @IanTheOutdoorGuy on August 17, 2025 at 2:20 pm

Justin the G.O.A.T of Camping and Hiking

  41. @Antonio.V.G on August 17, 2025 at 2:21 pm

    Awesome video Justin!
Quick question, in your opinion, which would be the best winter BUDGET free standing tent to use in the Canadian Rockies? Thanks 🙂

  42. @outdooraf on August 17, 2025 at 2:21 pm

I have that pack! Inexpensive and awesome

  43. @DoctorMantis on August 17, 2025 at 2:24 pm

I recently purchased the rei chair on sale for like $60 definitely worth it.

  44. @TessBanteres on August 17, 2025 at 2:24 pm

Huh? A spoon is gonna keep me warm in my sleeping bag? A pink titanium spoon? Never heard of that…
