Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I’ve seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

so how?
I’m 62 and just getting into it. Always fished, even bass tournaments…but I love elk and venison and want my own besides the occasional “meat gift”.
What episode of the podcast is this? I’d like to hear him talk about it but can’t seem to find it.
47 and just getting started. I don’t know what I don’t know.
I could listen to Ron all day…👍🏻
yeah my advice if the man literally can’t find his footing😅 don’t have a gun or scissors in your hands
I’m 40 years old and only just got into hunting in this last year. Went on my first hunt this past fall, sadly only got tag soup.
But your channel here has been one of my go-tos in learning what I need to know.
Thank you so much!
I always wanted to hunt deer/elk but ive ordered venison at multiple restaurants and i wont hunt it bc dont like it. Its tough.
Now ill skin a squirrel and make some mean gravy, or pick a bird or fish clean.
My point is i like hunting what i like eating. I dont see hunting as much of a sport as much as i see it as a home economic. Kinda like gardening or ironing
Thanks from another Newbie
I’m 36 and going on my first deer hunt next week
Where is the full video entire video? I would love to see this. Does anyone have to link?
My dad isn’t a hunter and my first gun was a Winchester 30-30 with a side mounted scope. The screws were too long and interfered with ejecting. Luckily I made enough $ to buy a Weatherby Vanguard 270 2 years later.🤣
That’s a really good mic
I wish I had someone to teach!!!
Although I agree with his philosophy there’s a lot of things you gotta figure out on your own too.read a book do a little research. Take a class. Get to know the basics.
Thanks for not answering the question
Hunted when I was a child with an uncle and loved going. Moved away to Southern California for school and career but back in blue ridge mountains now. Since I’m older and back where I grew up I’m trying to get back into it and it’s refreshing to try and brush up with nice people who actually want positivity and don’t act macho and have shitty tough guy fronts. Nice of you to make videos that welcome people. 🍻
I greatly appreciate how clearly and concisely you break down these fundamental topics. Normally educational shorts are a bit underwhelming. Yours deliver about as much information as can be understood in the time they are allowed.
As a guy who’s trying to learn my self I’m 25 I know lots of hunter asked to go I even have land we could hunt because I know they don’t wanna give up a spot but no one is willing to teach love your attitude tho
If you’re a great fisherman you’ll be a great hunter. Some have that sixth sense, some don’t.
Thats a great mindset im 30 and just getting into wanting a useful skill to teach my son it’s alot to take in
Went on my first hunt this past weekend, lost a decent sized doe because I screwed up my point of aim. Felt a little discouraged til a grizzled veteran gave me the whole “everybody’s lost nice deer” Schlegel and told me a personal story of his. I’m ready to get out there again and give it another shot, and this video was definitely helpful for beginner info. Thanks brother👍🏼
That’s the positive attitude I would like to find. I want to go hunting but I haven’t been since I was 12 or 13. I wouldn’t know where to start.
First learn dressing the animals then concentrate on hunting 👌🏼
Im an old hunter and i share your opinion on new hunters and its refreshing to hear the golden rule being applied to hunting youll never know everything there is to know but there sure is alot of know it alls keep your ears open and always be open to learning something new
Im in the same boat
You have a good energy about you. Thumbs up from me
I’m 63 and trying to figure out management areas in Florida now that the change has been made ???
Lol I thought you said silver jackass at the beginning.
The best Man at anything, was once upon a time, no more than a baby in a diaper.
👍
You’d be surprised some people who are 23 don’t even know gun saftey. Stay safe hunting
Come and hunt with us!! Roots of africa or big game africa hunting safaris
Join a forum(rockslide, 24 hour campfire etc) and try to meet some experienced hunters in your area. Also join your states hunter organization. You’ll meet lots of mentors there. Last but not least, get the best boots you can afford and try on lots and lots to find the right pair. Good luck and welcome! (:
where i’ve grown up EVERYONE hunts but i was never given the opportunity to learn because my parents are against it… now i’m in college and it’s def something i’d like to take up
I hunt in Illinois and haven’t gotten a rifle yet for whitetail. I can’t decide between the 30-30 or 350 legend but open to anything. any recommendations?
I’m 44 and interested myself
Thank you
I hunted the very first year i was old enough for big game and haven’t hunted sence, now im 33 and trying to get back into it. Its definitely not easy to get into.
first he needs to decide what he wants to hunt. From there he can decide what gear he will need.
At 66 years old ‘ I feel bad for the new guys. Everybody I knew growing up hunted.
Not so today.
First tip:
Don’t be a millennial
Man, you have an awesome attitude!
Subscribed and and looking forward to listening.
Thanks 👍
If you’re starting out just by yourself a 4-700 rifle with a $300 scope. Don’t waste your money on scopes with adjustable turrets. The cheap scopes won’t track well anyhow. Also, you don’t want to spend a ton on the rifle bc with your first rifle you will prob do something to it that could damage it anyhow by accident.
Start small, and then go for what you want later. Howas hold value pretty well as well as savage, Weatherby vanguards, and tikkas.
I am 65, and I am now eager to learn how to hunt. I think hog first since I live in California. Own 6.5, 4570, 556.
44 year old new hunter here. Literally every hunter I’ve talked to, there eyes light up when I start asking questions about hunting. And they are always happy to share info and knowledge. I’m proud to be a member of this club.
Need guys like this in every sport
They’ll be alright if you can keep them away from the fudds. Biggest source of false info and poor ethics
I heard silver jackass at first lol
