I’m just starting – solo car camping – and doing research via your page lol
I totally agree.
I have a lot of stuff already (not using sleeping bag, have a used, gifted headlamp, etc.) and anything I need I’ll purchase ~
thrifting first, sales second and full price is my last option.
Also, being a part of groups/clubs (REI membership) has helped me get clothing and I’ve seen so many used bags that would work for me (trying to use the skiing backpack I have until it dies lol).
Thanks for your content.
I greatly appreciate it!!
Most of the time its just my old issued assault pack, a woobie, gerber, and a coffee pot. Expensive isnt the name of the game, making it work is. Im not disparaging using gucci gear, but as an old instructor of mine said "good training can overcome bad gear"
Can you share how to get into the hobby? Like the most basics of basics? Like for people like me who never step foot outside in their own backyard but want to take up this particular hobby? I don’t even know where to begin.
You may not need a bunch of niche gear to get started … but if you do start you will find yourself just "needing" that niche gear … till one day you find yourself able to kit out a small Scout troup from your gear closet! Watch those wallets everyone and remember you don’t really "need" it (is advice I wish I could follow 😂)
Truth. You can also rent decent gear. I started backpacking at age 11 with an aluminum external frame 1970’s Kelty pack and a tube tent. 50 years later, still backpacking, just with better gear. 🌿
If you’re only going out for couple nights PERIOD. with absolutely 0 rain . Then you don’t need good gear . But if you plan on going alot and depending on your gear to work properly n last.. you might as well go ahead and buy better gear first..All that cheap Walmart crap only lasts couple trips. The tents aren’t waterproof if it storms you’re gonna get soaked unless you waterproof it yourself which is hard to do correctly…I started out with all Walmart gear too and it’s all just a waste of money . The only thing I still use that i bought when I started is my 24 ounce stanley pot..my pack broke my 4th trip . Tent is in the attic since getting rained on first trip n near drowned me in it .. I have ozark triail sleeping bag too but it’s extremely heavy and bulky I hate it. Jus try to do what you can tho I can’t tell anyone what to do.
The neish gear is just better cuz it’s more stuff less waight so it really depends if your just going for a 100 or 200 mi week then rly anything is fine but if your woong the WCPT you’ll need at least 60ibs of stuff including money to use at the laundry mat and for sure your water blatter and a water bottle and lots of protein snacks to have while you walk to find you in-between meals I recommend 16 hour days for it but if you just wanna have a relaxing trip 8 is just fine.
I just statted recently! I use a yoga mat for a sleeping pad to accommodate my heavy hips when i sleep, fleece is personally my best friend for sleep and i was able to make the sleeping bag out of it myself! (Zippers are surprisingly cheap) my bag is literally 20 years older than me but new clips and a zipper it works just fine. Love your videos btw!!
True also, you DO need a sleeping pad or else you’re going to be bruised and you DO need good shoes to avoid injury. Make sure you know what you need. Some environments are much more forgiving than others.
I would not recommend skimping on gear in little traveled places though. But you dont need to go somewhere difficult and deadly to enjoy hiking, going out at all is the best part.
Somethings I’ll spend good money on other things I’ll go cheap.
Stick with the 5 C’s of survival my friends

Just gotta go out and get after it!
You just need something water proof or good luck in Scotland 😂
Thank You. Someone needed to hear that. 😊

I’ve picked up remarkably good equipment at Goodwill!
What’s the minimum gear i need for an overnight hike? One night.
Crystal blue eyes, beautiful like the backcountry
Shes most lookatable person ever
I just bought a 4 person tent from Value Village for 4$… brand new… not everything has to be from MEC or NorthFace
Try not to have you sleeping bag on the outside of the pack. Not a mistake you ever want to make ever when just starting out.

People like to make excuses to justify why they don’t get off their behind and do stuff. That’s how they feel good about not doing stuff.
She gorgeous

this is taking me back to my excitement over cheap walmart gear the first time i went camping. I didn’t know anyone else experienced that!
The first is the best 😊
Don’t spend a lot of money until you know backpacking is for you. Stay safe and hike with experienced hikers the first few times out.
Wow that’s how my pack looks when I first started in 2014. Gotta work with what you have on the first run
Truth. You actually don’t need to be in head to toe REI to just hike
Buy used gear it’s the best to start with
I live in Toronto also
True but dont go under equipped. Only takes one mis step for forever sleep.

I’ve DIY’d so much of my gear, and I’m pretty sure my entire gear collection is less than $200. You definitely don’t need to be rich to backpack.

I just hate tourists in my country
Why does it look like you’re always trampling off trail in ALL your videos?
