Five unexpected uses for gear while backpacking. #hiking #gear
Gear that serves multiple purposes means less weight on our backs on adventures. These are five of our favorites:
1. Tyvek wrap is a waterproof barrier used in house construction. We use it as a ground sheet under our tent and for cowboy camping, as well as waterproofing for our sleeping pads.
2. Bear canisters are heavy and unpleasant to carry, but at least they make great chairs!
3. We don’t bring sandals or camp shoes on our trips. We do like to relax our feet at camp, and loose shoes worn without socks make surprisingly nice slippers!
4. Tim once got poison ivy all over his face by using a jacket as a pillow. Now we loosely stuff our waterproof clothing bags and they are perfect for the job.
5. We save weight by using a tent that doesn’t need dedicated poles. Hiking poles are the only poles our tent needs.
Wish I knew you guys. You’re so pleasant, smart and together, a wonderful example. I wish you well…from an old vet, retired in the foothills of the Smokies.
All great except the “slippers” 😅 I really hate the feeling of wearing shoes barefoot, I take slippers/sandals with me
That was pretty lame bro
Quick question….. I noticed that you guys are using closed cell foam sleeping pads. Why not go with a blow up version?
I don’t know about shoes without socks, it doesn’t sound very comfortable.
5. Hiking poles: Is that on the Kings Range trail by Shelter Cove?
fuck tyvek all my homies use zip system
I feel like they smell
Nailed the advertisement voices
Coated Tyvek is full of PFA’s. Probably best not to sleep on a toxic bed for months on end!
I thought, how is that comfortable then I realized all that hiking, a picnic table would feel comfortable 😂 ❤
The worst thing you can possibly do is wear shoes without socks. JHC, keep your tips to yourselves.
SMH the foot fungus between you two could bake bread by the end of your trip.
I can’t imagine how bad my shoes would smell after months of hiking, I refuse to hangout with people after work if I have to take my shoes off lmao
I bring Decathlon Olaian 100 2mm neoprene SURFING shoes on my hikes instead of slippers/flip flops, when around camp. 134 grams only, 20 bucks, they give some ankle support and are easy to stuff at the bottom of my backpack, I can also use them to cross a small river or walk in water if necessary.. like if I’d want to bath in a lake in the morning, I don’t wear them too long in cold weather because when wet they don’t insulate too much.. water comes through. Much cheaper alternative to barefoot shoes and lighter.
I had too buy a new pair because I used them as overshoes over my Meindls boots, when my soles came loose due to PU hydrolysis. This way my soles kept in place and I could finish last day 18k hike moutain pass in Albania
Tyvek was not designed to be a construction material but is most widely used as that today. Thoug- it has ALWAYS been used as ppe and envelope material etc. Don’t know when people started to use it as groundsheets and tarps and even tent material but that has to be quite a long time ago since it was discovered 75 years ago and ever since been just looking for applications
Little burritos? What’s normal size burrito look like?
Ever come across Sasquatch trackways?
I want a video of you guys just frowning the whole time
I just never will be ultra light. Comfort is comforting lol I don’t bring anything I regret, but I regret not bringing it if I dont.
Oh man I just realised if I ever want to do something like this (which I’m realising I do), I must find some way to sleep without my chiropractic pillow and not wake up in horrible pain🤔
What kind of shoes you wear?
I wish i had these hacks and tricks when i went travelling in 2002!!! I will store them in my mind palace!!! Thank you <3<3<3
lowes, 1/2 lb $15 tyvek coverall, with built in hood and booties, sheds rain and blocks wind well. I’ts camo in winter, (white) and gives you at least 5F degrees of warmth inside of your sleeping bag. It "breathes" a little bit, while sleeping, but it’ll cook you while hiking.
We can do so much with so little! Thank you for spreading the word! ❤
An ultra light inflatable nemo sleeping pad is greatest piece of backpacking gear I own. Highly recommend over that folding sleeping pad and will protect you from the cold ground.
I bought a cheap inflatable at family dollar I want to layer it with tyvek then sew a rollable fabric like case around it.
It never dawned on me to use tyvek. Brilliant.
😂 I have tyvek in my 48hr bag and my jeep
My butt wouldn’t fit on that chair. 😅
Hope u have a great trip
I don’t substitute anything for my pillow, except a wonderful camping pillow. I’m not skipping on that!
Tyvek, dam good idea, thanks!
I use a small bit of Tyvek in the vestibule to stop the tent from getting muddy, £4 from ebay uk
My folks work contruction. The tyvek vendor once dropped off swag bags, and included was a jacket made of tyvek. This was probably 20 years ago. Its lived in every car ive ever owned, just in case! Keeps out wind and rain, and fits inside a sandwich bag!
Tyvek usage is the best info ever. Cheers
Is the hiking pole going to hold up in extreme wind? Here in CO/Wyo I would be nervous
Cool
Ah Ty-VEK what a handy construction product. It can be printed on for advertising in inclimate weather – indoor and out. No wonder campers use it for ground insulation.
Weirdos
I’m trying to think that you guys are doing it all 😃, but I really think you’re actually just deluding yourselves. I know it sounds distasteful, but it it seems like you guys are recovering addicts.. and that’s beautiful ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊but, maybe you should put that out there and that’s why you guys share a spark, and have no underwear and just live grimy forever…😊 Because you beat the nasty demon of addiction 🤔🤔 I mean you know that’s the only way I can explain how you guys do this hiking thing… Because you don’t even try to make it comfy or enjoyable. For a good minute you didn’t even know what kind of shoewear to wear.. you thought heavy hikers were the way to go but then the stupid hokas or where it is. I’ve asked people about their hokas and they’re not that great.. not like mountain climbing good.
That shoe slipper hack wack, homeslice. You a’nt sayin shoes are slippas. If dat the case, the homie Leroy be wearing slippers all day but he a’nt homedawg he just can’t afford laces dawgslice
Cool to see.. but I could never do ultra light😂. I enjoy the creature comforts and camp shoes/real sandals are a must for me
Good way to get athletes foot wearing no socks. Stupid
Why not buy a jeep? You can take a lot more stuff with you
I eat with my right hand. I also use it to wipe my butthole
So you use your shoes as shoes
Tyvek is great as a multi purpose material. My back hurts, just from seeing you use Z-Rest mats. I never could go back to those, having used air mattresses for years now.
Wash that Tyvek a couple of times and it will be much softer and fold better.
These are all basic tips nothing brilliant about them
People like this always look so unhealthy. Skin grey, hair limp too skinny but they do have the grin of cult members
Stuff sacks as pillows don’t work too well. I’m making a foam filled pillow. Tired of cricks in my neck.
