Backpacking the Adventure Hiking Trail Best Hiking in Indiana?
For our annual mid December father son backpacking trip during college break we chose an overnighter on the Adventure Hiking Trail in Southern Indiana. The AHT was not our first choice but with cold night temps in all the states around us this was our best option. Other options we considered were Dolly Sods, Grayson Highlands, Crannberry Wilderness or even Oil Creek but those places were going to be in the low 20’s or colder and we were not prepared for that, so those will have to wait for another day.

Persimmons!
The adventure trail is on my list for 2023
You sir are eating a persimmon. The town of Mitchell has a festival for them in the fall every year. The pudding and ice cream is awesome.
They sounded like sandhill cranes to me too.
Awesome to have you and your son out on the trails
Merry Christmas to you all and have yourself a fantastic Happy New Year
You mentioned the Laurel Highlands trail. My husband and I recommend an excellent book by Dane Cramer titled, "Romancing the Trail". It documents his through hike of this trail and also highlights much of the history surrounding it. Excellent read, and is available on amazon.
Oh, and I don’t think that’s a wall. That’s a geological formation.
persimmons?
Hey Jason – nice video! What month did you tackle the AHT?
I’m glad you got to see a few good views along the way! Congrats to your son on his PR, that’s an accomplishment! Thanks for the shoutout- one of these days I’ll have my AHT done and I’ll be sure to let you know when it’s out, haha. Merry Christmas, Jason!
I think you found a persimmon !!! Little past it’s "prime" I would say…..but I think that is what you found. Great video Jason!!! I see you are getting up there with subs. Very cool. I know you are passionate about that speed records, however I really like the laid back videos (I am a tad bit older than you are tho….LOL). Keep up the good work. Your videos are really gtreat.
Another great vid and job well done for your boy, also……GOBLUE
You’ve got to try the Tecumseh trail now, for your Indiana triple crown! Thanks for the shoutout! 🤙
One of my favorite trails in Indiana. Great video Jason.
I remember backpacking the ADT back in 97 and it wasn’t that well marked and got lost a few times, glad to see that changed some!! Had a mouse chew on my Gregory Robson at Indian Creek Shelter and that tiny shelter to the right of the main shelter was used for firewood.. Funny you mention not hearing any ambient natural sounds, in 96 while traveling down Cold Friday Rd to do maintenance on the American Discovery Trail, I saw my first Sasquatch there😳!!! .. That freaked me out for years, but ehh you leave them alone, they won’t bother you. Anyways, On the way to Lloyd’s Shelter that creek bed, I’ve never seen water in it.. Anyway, great job hiking the ADT and "Boot’s Off" to your son for a AWESOME job too… Hoobilly
What’s up with all this "Gut Hook" chat? I don’t care if the video is dated you should all do an update cause Gut Hook no longer exists as a separate entity it’s either been folded into or expanded into FarOut on Apple’s App Library.
Rugged Mountain Mister and i are starting our 2 night palmetto trail hike in 2 days!! I hope he will still come back and go with me when HE’S back from college!! That last shelter was incredible!! Merry Christmas Jason, hope you’re having a great weekend!!
Have you checked out the Cumberland Trail in TN? It is considered a state park, but it is a linear trail through TN. I have done some sections, Chicamauga Creek (my spelling is terrible) and a couple of other areas. I have never been a backpacker so I have jumped on and done some day hikes, but it is meant for both day & thru hiking. If you like waterfalls, the area of Virgin Falls, Around Sparta TN, is really pretty. Not sure those are the miles you like, but you can add some miles to your hike by looping off the main trail. I believe Cumberland Trail might be more your style with some length and cool features. Anyways….food for thought. Catch you soon !!!
Nice Father and son hiking trip. Thanks for sharing Jason. Merry Christmas
Looks like you had good weather and a nice trip. Oil Creek is a great place to hike and camp. Some people who stay in the shelters use a couple of tarps to block the openings and keep the warmth in from the fireplace. Blessings for your family in 2023. -Daniel
Good to see your son join you. Does your wife ever hike with you? What’s your favorite place to hike, if you were a semi newbie to this sort of thing? thanks so much Jason!
The fruit you found are Persimmons.
11:00 Nah, those are just ghosts yelling hello. 😂
Check out indianas other trails in morgan Monroe
Love seeing a new trail in a state we know nothing about! Thanks for opening up our minds!! 💚💚
Awesome tradition you all have got going on there! Definitely agree with you though…that would have been a long drive for that hike in the woods. But that Lloyd’s shelter was very nice. Wish we had some shelters like that on the trails here in Ohio or WV. Thanks for sharing.
Love your tradition of taking your son on a winter break hike each year. Those will be great memories for him and you! That last shelter and view were awesome. That might be worth the trip just to hike there!!😎😎
Great video as always. Really enjoyed the drone views too. I’ve got one, but not very good flying it yet!!🤣🤣🤣
What time of day did you start on day one
Those are definitely Sandhill Cranes.
Fantastic hike my friend, this looks brilliant! Shots are so beautifully executed! 👌👌
