for those who aren’t familiar: literally any job in Yosemite is entitled to housing. Same with most national parks. good housing? God no. but housing none the less. Is it free? Not quite. Depends on the unit, but it’s fairly cheap and taken directly out of your paycheck. Lower employees, aka anyone just starting out in this or seasonal, can expect dorm or tent style housing, with shared bathrooms and roommates. Depending on the area, you will likely make friends for life. While everything in the area is expensive, you do get discounts on most things, which brings down food costs. However you’re going to get paid pretty terribly and you’ll likely experience human rights violations depending on who your manager is. You have to follow federal AND state law, as all national parks are considered federal. You will get yelled at by tourists constantly, but you will also meet some of the nicest tourists. You will live in some of the most beautiful places on earth, but you will also watch people do their darndest to destroy it, or just simply not understand common sense (NO YOU CANNOT TOUCH WILD ANIMALS HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU). My advice? Go with a friend or partner. Doesn’t change the bathroom situation, but it does mean your roommate won’t be a stranger. And keep your expectations low. You will not have all the free time in the world, because your managers will make you work very odd hours and you’ll be exhausted. Just because you’re in a national park does not make the job any less of a minimum wage nightmare. And while Yosemite does have a union, other national parks may not, depending on where you go.
anyway don’t get killed by wild animals and look both ways even when crossing one way streets and verify which company you’re working for because some are much worse than others.

Worked there in 80-81..hard work cleaning wob’s and rooms..after meals and shared tent expenses made about $1.75an hour..but it was so nice to wake up and on my way to work and breakfast to see the critters and the beautiful scenery
