Good tips. In Vegas my closest snow is pretty safe at Mt. Charleston but still good tips for me as a rookie. BTW started my electric blanket search after the last video. Picked up a unit from Biddeford at walmart. 180watt on the label but so far not sure it’s the right one. On low it seems to act as a PWM heater. It cycles 170watt on and off where as higher settings keep it on more constant. Single 80AH battery and solar so gonna test this. Maybe I need a 120AH battery to keep the fam comfortable.

Is your teardrop a hiker?
i bought a road pro blanket and an adaptor to hook blanket directly to a deep cycle battery. it uses 55 watts. has on ly one setting. i will put in my house one night and see how long it lasts. finally an answer. i will connect to my 27 group deep cycle battery . I’m confident i will get a full night out of it

Yeah. I need snowshoes. All those I borrowed are gone.😱. They were the big old wood and leather type. Straight line. Fun! Something a bit more forgiving going around the brush would be nice. I think.
Thank you for another insightful and beautiful video, Drew. You make winter camping seems so easy! Not sure if we are ready for it though, haha! We were planning to stay the New Years Eve in Portland, and my wife was already pretty nervous about the chilly weather there. I’m not sure if I can convince her about going somewhere even colder than that.
But now our plans may shift anyway, another lockdown seems to be on the horizon. It looks like we’ll have to pick up whatever destination that’s close to our home…

I camped in a valley to wake up to a couple inches of snow the morning. Ended up having to winch myself out over the pass. Made for a long day. But I’m never to to far from help if I need it. I do like to be overly prepared. I’ll be getting the "spot" GPS responder. Older I get the, the more I understand I’m not invisible.

What special things do you do for water storage in the winter?
if i get an electric blanket with a 12v cig lighter plug in on it . can i cut the end off that plugs into cig lighter and connect the two wires directly to a deep cycle battery. i think i can get an elect blanket to run all night that way!!!!!
In the U.K. nearly every camp ground closes for the whole of winter. We do not have places where we can camp overnight! It’s outrageous how we can’t stay anywhere. Our country is going down a massive slope at the moment with brexshit! In my next time I will choose to be born in Canada! Thank you for your well informed vlogs. I look forward to watching. why do i have to figure out all of this stuff. so now i use the roadpro elect blanket when i sit in front of library to use internet. seems to work ok. i ts 12v…………….so now i want a 12v heater for my car. i have the adaptor thing so i can place a deep cycle battery in my car and plug the 12v into the adaptor and plug directly into a battery.!!!! bypassing the energy sucking inverter completely!!!!!!!!!! so now I’m searching for 150 watt 12 v heaters. their are some that are cheap and some expensive. i want the most efficient heater i can find. my goal is to get a heater to heat for at least 5 hours on a larger size deep cycle battery. so far i get about two hours on a 150 watt heater, on a smaller deep cycle with inverter. i think i double that . with bypassing the inverter complletely
I’m sure we are just hitting the tip of the iceberg with these winter camping ideas. Any other suggestions for places to stay or just good winter camping advice in general?

Another great one! And some of the best backpacking / camping experiences I have ever had have been alone, deep in the midst of the barren wilderness, and in the winter. Sometimes for several days at a time. Winter camping can be fantastic!

Great tips! Might I suggest adjustable length poles with snow baskets for snowshoeing. Great for improved efficiency and mighty handy for probing uncertain spots.
Well, looking at this video sure makes me miss snow (NOT). It’s interesting how you can go from having a skiing teacher license to not liking snow. These days I much rather drive down to Death Valley or the Mojave desert than drive up to hit snow. Guess living in northern CA gives you that freedom. Don’t get me wrong, good advise in this video for those who do like to go into white and wintery areas – last time I did that it was a nice hotel up in Tahoe – nothing scary there except for some questionable dinner options. If you do go out camping in the winter don’t be an idiot and play it safe. Just like camping in the desert in summer – remote environments all have their perils and you better be aware of them.
Well, we decided no camping for da Mrs birthday end of December, but then the Covid restrictions may well be kicking in again. So I think I will preemptively prep the teardrop to head out into the cold (not Alaska cold – more like worst scenario 48 degree northern California cold without snow). Note to self: bring lots of firewood…
