I second the Facebook Marketplace comment. I was able to find a Coleman Skydome 4-person tent (MSRP: $130 at Walmart) for $40, and took that to my first camping trip at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL last month. The previous owner had used the tent exactly once, and it was exactly what I needed for a cost that I wouldn’t have been too sad over had I not enjoyed it as much as I did.

I think $250 dollars would be a solid budget. Which would be about a week’s pay for someone working for the federal minimum wage.

I think absolute bare basics camping and having an actually enjoyable experience would cost roughly $300 at a combo of walmart, Amazon and Costco for low to mid range gear.

I accumulated probably just under $1k worth of gear before I moved away from home and had to abandon my gear at my parents’ place. Hadn’t gone camping in years and finally went this year for a friend’s wedding in the woods. I actually spent about $500 total to reup on my gear on top of maybe $100 worth of genral outdoor rec stuff I already had on hand, but $200 of the $500 was definitely creature comforts and "just in case" stuff and a lot of it isn’t really overland focused, niether was my gear that I abandoned, but more "pull up to a campsite and set up". I bought it with the intention of continuing ot go camping at least twice a year, and I want this gear to suffice for me and my wife, so I went OK quality, but cheap enough that if it didn’t meet expectation its nbd.

So here is what I considered as part of my $300 "necessities" Gear-

    Walmart Gear –
Ozark Trail Mess Kit – $10
Ozark Trail Skillet Set – $24
48QT Cooler (Would go bigger if camping longer than a few days)- $25
    Pop-up Canopy 10×10- $50
    Sleeping bag – $20
    mini charcoal grill – $15
    Grilling utensils kit – $20
    Cooking utensils kit – $15
    Tent – $27
    Knife set – $18
Inflatable matress (can be subbed for a sleeping pad) – $20

    Amazon Gear-

    Folding shovel – $28.00
    Camp pillow – $18
    200ft of Paracord – $17

Total for above comes out to just under $300 and leaves some space for other creature comforts like maybe a camp stove.
Again a lot of the purchase decisions were made with the idea that this gear would be used a few times a year, and dedicated for this purpose. Packaged most of this gear between two plastic totes. Just need to throw em in my truck and go. Get home, take inventory, maybe wash some things, then pack em back up and shuck it in storage till next time.

I bet reading the "description" for those items online is hilarious.
Tent: "Please insert adaptable beam inside ground surface for having most balances enjoyment. Now lncrease a mechanism for structure completed and."

  5. @ashketchem6511 on March 14, 2025 at 12:54 am

    Buy once cry once

  6. @bradrichey7512 on March 14, 2025 at 12:55 am

I have that same tent!! Iv used a few times. It works good but it won’t last long if you use it a lot!!

  7. @SunnyFly100 on March 14, 2025 at 12:56 am

Please do not use that gear! The tent has no ventilation, condensation is going to be horrible. The tent will leak in no time. The sleeping pad has no insulation and will deflate overnight. You will be cold, wet, and miserable. You will be vaccinated against camping for life if you use that cheap gear!

  8. @t.o.f.t.s. on March 14, 2025 at 12:56 am

I 2nd $1,000 budget. A person could save $100/mo for a year, then buy some decent gear. Not budget, not the best, but pretty good.

  9. @RuffTymesBob on March 14, 2025 at 12:58 am

You might as well do the $100 Temu thing next. I know everyone else has done it already, but I like your honest opinions, and I think you do a better job at it.

  10. @davidtepic8324 on March 14, 2025 at 1:02 am

Those 100$ get you more right now in TikTok shop

  11. @Reyvil777 on March 14, 2025 at 1:04 am

true just a new fully equiped truck for camping, why spend a lotnof money on camping gear 😂

  12. @Fotosynthesis858 on March 14, 2025 at 1:05 am

I would’ve setup the tent in the truck bed. I hate sleeping on the ground ✌🏾

  13. @BurningtunaDC on March 14, 2025 at 1:08 am

How a billionaire gets average people to sell his stuff for him without paying them.

  14. @JohnDoe-cd6ro on March 14, 2025 at 1:09 am

Seam seal and waterproof the tent with some waterproofing spray, lay down an emergency blanket on the floor of the tent to reflect heat, layer up, get a used, surplus military issued bivvy and you’re good to go. All that can be done for anywhere between 100-130 bucks. Not bad for a cold night’s setup. Thats what I do. I don’t camp all the time maybe twice a year and ive had one of these tents last me since about 2018-2019.

this video gets +10 points for the dave portnoy mention

  16. @chappie7523 on March 14, 2025 at 1:10 am

I would think that you could get a pretty dang good set up for $500. Sierra can have some good deals. Looking for close out deals, clearance sales etc can land you with a good set up and not cost a fortune. I happened to go to camping world when they had an extra 50% off clearance and scored Kelty tents for the kids for $30. I also got a Jet Boil stove for $50.

    $500 REI

  19. @WendyPacheco87 on March 14, 2025 at 1:12 am

I hate heat so much that I would probably be perfectly cozy in that sleeping bag at 10⁰F ❤

  20. @bigr0075 on March 14, 2025 at 1:12 am

I’d spend a $100 on a 0 F degree sleeping bag first. The rest is just comfort. This was a cool video though

  21. @thelonelygamer7861 on March 14, 2025 at 1:13 am

That tent is 16 bucks on AliExpress

  22. @PreparedToWander on March 14, 2025 at 1:13 am

Good video concept. Simplicity is good in today’s world of fancy brand name stuff. Nice truck too, maybe it’s stock, but you got all the bells and whistles from the dealer? lol.

  23. @Hobbyaddiction101 on March 14, 2025 at 1:16 am

Good videos I like the Ozark 4 person dome tent has a little spot for your shoes and Ozarks got a 4 in 1 stove like yours but the kit comes with a adapter so u can use a regular one pond green tank and a nice tarp over your tent can help big time

  24. @theregularguy44 on March 14, 2025 at 1:16 am

The names of the products was killing me 😂

  25. @Sauloutdoors on March 14, 2025 at 1:17 am

  27. @eriiinkemp on March 14, 2025 at 1:18 am

I think $500 budget with no specific store and trying to make it the most comfortable camping would be cool! I feel like that is a very realistic budget for beginning camping!

  28. @Willstyle81_ on March 14, 2025 at 1:19 am

I mean for what it is you did pretty good

  29. @AndrewTaylor-e7v on March 14, 2025 at 1:19 am

This is helpful I’m going to be homeless in about 2 weeks so I will be staying at the free campgrounds in Florida I need a budget camping setup to live in for at least the next 3 months before I get the results in regards to my waiver for the army and this is in my budget. Keep up the great work I just subscribed to your channel😁

  36. @gwlane5509 on March 14, 2025 at 1:30 am

Just a suggestion. Get out and support REI this fall. They are struggling and employee owned.
Big box stores and Amazon are killing them. They are a good store and need our support!

  37. @johnmazigian1987 on March 14, 2025 at 1:30 am

you should do temu budget video XD

  38. @kcbc9037 on March 14, 2025 at 1:31 am

100% correct. The cheap stuff will not last as long, and true you dont need very high end stuff to go out in nature and have a good time. Just the irony of talking about this wearing what a $500ish rain jacket is hilarious

  39. @wyatts.4513 on March 14, 2025 at 1:32 am

would be cool to see an $100 ebay camping setup

    great video

  44. @jeeper426 on March 14, 2025 at 1:39 am

I use the rule of 2, for one person a 2 person tent is big enough for one person plus gear, also a cargo blanket on the tent floor helps with a little coushion and some insilation under you, also a simple battery fan is a life saver in a tent like that just to keep air moving and if you are able to catch some flow under the fly keep condensation at minimum if not clear

  45. @4hm-y4b on March 14, 2025 at 1:40 am

No disrespect, but you don’t need a brand new vehicle to go over Landing. I agree there’s some great gear out there that is cheap priced think I’d rather save a little bit on gear and a vehicle.

  46. @Blendsbysantana on March 14, 2025 at 1:40 am
