Kauai Adventures: The Secret Tunnels Hike

Kauai’s secret tunnels hike has been said to be one of the most difficult hikes on the island. The difficulty of this hike doesn’t come from the elevation, distance or technical skill needed, it’s the environment around the hike. You will most likely be getting very wet, muddy, and scratched up. If you are willing to endure the hike, and you get the right day, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful lush Kauai hills that most people will never set their eyes on.

Next time turn around in those conditions. Secret Tunnels are not the only hazards for that area. The rivers can swell up so bad that the your 4×4 won’t be able to cross the roads on the way out. It’s best to do this hike in the summertime and start very early to take advantage of the long daylight hours. The waterfalls at the end of the Secret Tunnels WILL NOT dry up. LOL

Definitely DO NOT hike on Kauai (or in Hawaii in general) in heavy rain conditions. Flash flooding happens here all the time and without much notice. So many visitors get stuck on the wrong side of a river during heavy rains and either get trapped there until the river level drops or they have to get rescued by helicopter….not cheap. Don’t mess with mother nature…she’s not very forgiving here. Glad you guys made it without any issues. The waterfall was raging!! Love watching your adventures! Aloha~
