Ultimate Guide to Backpacking Gear for Beginners

Ultimate Guide to Backpacking Gear for Beginners

NOTE: I highly recommend beginner backpackers borrow, rent, or buy used gear in order to get a feel for what works and what doesn’t. And to see if backpacking is even an activity that is enjoyed!

Experienced hiker here, still love this content aimed at beginners. Like to know that I have good gear. Hope to bump into you one day on a hike in the Rockies.

Justin, can you do a more ‘inclusive’ kit list? Like kit available over the pond?

  3. @bradshuby on May 22, 2025 at 10:54 am

Checking in on this list as someone who has some gear and has done a couple trips. Ironically my upgrades were similar to what you discussed: I did the REI trailmade 60 as I like to carry a little extra in my bag, love my durston x-mid 2 tent, and went with the zenbivy core 20 bed with the new nemo pad. I think footwear is my biggest piece even 3 years in, I think I like boots most because I tend to look around a lot while trekking and it is easier for me to prevent ankle issues with the support.

I would stress the importance of good hiking socks. Nice merino wool socks make wet feet far more tolerable and blisters far less common. I recommend the brand people socks, they have the exact same composition as darn tough or smart wool but at half the price/pair (you just have to buy 4 at a time, which will have you set for any length adventure). I’ve been hiking in mine for years with no issues!

Ide love to see a 3 season pack list, for your home base here in the Canadian rockies. Most of us won’t be pushing -10*c but want to get out from middle of may to September.

While this might not be ultra light it’s not packing for -40*c either. This way we can buy once cry once and just have a bit of a heavier pack while still being comfortable.

Good video, but all these REI recommendations are useless for non US.

  10. @Obi-Wan_Pierogi on May 22, 2025 at 11:07 am

Justin, listen, you’ve got to stop recommending gear that I can’t get. That Rock Front setup, the regular size isn’t available. (hook a brother up) ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. @bucky716 on May 22, 2025 at 11:08 am

I’m just about geared out but always curious about what you’re recommending. Gear like this is excellent for beginners AND into the phase of being an experienced weekend warrior.

  12. @DadsAdventureTime on May 22, 2025 at 11:09 am

Sorry a Trekking pool tent is Nowhere near a storm worth As a semi free standing Storm.
Worthy must mean something different america As I can tell you , you’re tracking poll tent wood not last 5 minute in a UK storm

  13. @jakel3412 on May 22, 2025 at 11:10 am

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for trying to get into backpacking for the first time this summer!

  14. @philsmith2444 on May 22, 2025 at 11:12 am

The Granite Gear Perimeter 50 is a good option, 1.4kg with torso length and width adjustments, 2 available hip belts for waist sizes up to 52โ€, and a 40lb capacity. $250MSRP, itโ€™s $175 now and I see them on sale often. It has a total of 6 pockets – 2 hip belt pockets, 2 stretch mesh side pockets, and 2 stretch mesh front pockets. 6 compression straps and 2 criss-cross top straps to cinch the pack or secure gear above the drawstring top closure.

This is great information, Justin. I generally don’t comment, but as someone focusing content on beginners, I just wanted to acknowledge the work you put into making a clear and concise video for the majority of backpackers out there (potential weekend warriors).

  16. @dirtbagmoto on May 22, 2025 at 11:23 am

The Helix sleeping pad is 30% off right now during REI sales, great deal IMHO.

  17. @dz6815 on May 22, 2025 at 11:26 am

STILL trying to decide what rain jacket to buy. I’ve never been on a multi-day backpacking trip before, especially in the rain, but nevertheless I’ve prepared a good set of โ€œbuy once, cry onceโ€ gear, except for the jacket. I even bought waterproof pants because I caught Haglofs gortex pants at 70% off, but I still can’t decide if I should buy a "membrane" jacket or go with a non-breathable one like Frogg Toggs. . I think I can tolerate the fact that it will not breathe, but I am more concerned that it will not protect from strong wind, while a proper membrane jacket will. Any help is appreciated!

  18. @ericmullins6794 on May 22, 2025 at 11:27 am

Thanks for remembering your roots and going back to basics every now and then. Plus you explained why and what to look for. Good job !!

  19. @thisisntgood71 on May 22, 2025 at 11:29 am

If you’re making this video for newcomers, do them a favor. Put more emphasis on the backpack. On the sizing. How to size. All these videos I see similar to yours, they just fly over things. If you really want to help the new people, I would make a whole video on just the correct sizing

  20. @CombatBanana on May 22, 2025 at 11:31 am

I think the Rockfront Rain Hoodie is probably worth the extra money (like $60 or something) compared the Frog Toggs with it’s poor durability.

  21. @alsnyder1660 on May 22, 2025 at 11:32 am

Thanks Justin. This is a really well-done video.

  22. @yuhatensei9082 on May 22, 2025 at 11:35 am

Hii u clearly need to review the Bonfus Aerus 55L !

  23. @JoshSweet on May 22, 2025 at 11:38 am

Durston and REI packs both top out at 21โ€ torso, so any one with 23-25โ€ torso have to get ULA or LiteAF

  24. @bryanedwards187 on May 22, 2025 at 11:39 am

First! Love your content man, got me going on more solo trips. As a new dad also, it’s great to recharge
