What a fun and informative interview with that nice couple! Great tip about the air mattress! Makes me want to go tent camping! Love seeing adorable Princess! Thanks for the fantastic video, Randi!

Hats off to the couples who want to do backpacking. We can’t seem to push ourselves there. If at all, we might try bike touring but even that is a stretch. Our major problem is having to "crawl" into our tent every night as opposed to being able to stand up in our tent. We like to hang out in our tent (our regular tent where we can stand up and run loops in it if we want). In a bike tour, we’d likely not have that luxury and that’s gonna seem like a "penalty" of sort. That being said, bike touring does seem very appealing, given the right route. Looking forward to seeing more content on your channel. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Randi, we have something in between a tent and RV. We have an SUV tent. We sleep in the back of the SUV (on a folding memory foam mattress) and the tent attaches to the back of the SUV. We use the tent to store our gear and our camping potty. It’s nice to be able to look up through the moonroof at the stars and feel a bit more protected from the elements. We just ordered our Little Guy Max, which will allow us to camp in more diverse weather conditions. I really enjoyed your winter camping video.

The scariest calculation of all: Divide all ownership costs by the number of nights actually slept in the RV! The cost per night will frighten you.

Randi this is an awesome video!
We were avid tenters for years! Then we moved up to a teardrop (no sleeping on ground/no set up and easier to leave: add food, clothes, hook up in garage and we were off!) then a few years we moved up to an rv (comforts). And all 3 have their advantages/disadvantages yet they all got us out for a weekend adventure!
Again, great idea for a video and thanks for sharing with others so they can make a decision based on their individual needs! Now you need to do a teardrop interview 😉 to cover your middle ground.
    Safe travels!

Consider RV storage fees, registration & license fees, Insurance costs and depreciation.

  9. @MyGoatShedLife on December 10, 2024 at 7:53 pm

What a fun video, and such a sweet couple to share their experiences with you. Their little car has to get great gas milage, so long trips on a budget are within reach. The vestibules are like your night stand…lol. I concur anyone can camp and outside is a great place to be. Great video! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Randi, We are new here. What a great interview with lots of info. Great idea about the red light.

  11. @offworlder1 on December 10, 2024 at 7:54 pm

RV camping is more enjoyable, safer, and allows the comforts of home in the wild. I like the outdoors but I want to feel safe while I sleep not be worried if I am able to fast draw a weapon if attacked by an animal at night that the electric bear fence did not deter. Having heat and air condition is also a “basic need” along with a shower/bathroom.

  12. @enroutewithchuckandcherie on December 10, 2024 at 7:56 pm

We started tent camping for the first time last year!! Love it!!! Like you said being outside rejuvenates you!!! Enjoyed your video!!!

What great information. I don’t believe you will ever see me in a tent but our son loves to go tend camping, by himself. Gave me some ideas for gifts for him. Thanks, Randi!

  16. @ryanclausman6099 on December 10, 2024 at 8:00 pm

I’ve been camping for 40 years. My advice skip the tent and the rv. Go for hammocks. Most versatile, comfortable, inexpensive way to camp. My dad is 76 and he still camps in a hammock.

  17. @clarnowhat on December 10, 2024 at 8:04 pm

Hi Randi! It’s Jenny from the video! This was so fun to watch and you couldn’t even tell that I desperately needed a shower. Haha! Thanks for being a great camp neighbor. Hope to see you again soon!

  18. @bettymoonlight6203 on December 10, 2024 at 8:07 pm

I tent camped for decades, the last 10 year we’ve had a pop up, and two travel trailers. After our wheel fell off, twice in as many months, we are selling the camper and going back to tenting. I’ve never had a wheel fall off a tent.

  19. @tefamilyadventures on December 10, 2024 at 8:08 pm

  20. @777cretbo on December 10, 2024 at 8:09 pm

I’ve done both now …. Both are great. Will say … Set up a tent kot in a Gazelle Gazebo is so fast of a set up and not pulling a camper is really nice.

  21. @billwilber9089 on December 10, 2024 at 8:11 pm

I have had three sizes of campers. I like the small fiberglass one best.
I could pick it up by the tongue and move it where I wanted.
I have had three different sizes of tents before and after campers.
I prefer a 7’x7′ popup tent with attached floor and rain fly.
One major advantage for small tent camping is that you can pop it up in any campsite.

So, I have often had the best, remote site in the area.

  22. @NSF_CatZaddy on December 10, 2024 at 8:12 pm

Hi Randi! It’s John from the video! This was such a fun experience. Hope to have you as a camp neighbor again soon. We are glad to share our experiences with this community, and learn from this communities experiences. You have great editing skills 🙂

  23. @joycemoses2411 on December 10, 2024 at 8:14 pm

Great information! Once while we were tent camping, a critter was trying to get in our tent, and thank goodness the neighbor’s dog scared it away! Whew!

  24. @cruisepuppy on December 10, 2024 at 8:15 pm

My husband and I just chose a nice $300 tent over the $31,000 small trailer we had our eye and hearts set on. We are going to give it a try and, if we like it, we will have saved enough money to make LOTS of trips without dragging along a big payment! Plus, no insurance needed, etc. This video was encouraging to me that, hopefully, we made the right decision and will still have lots of fun!

  25. @Grace-lw4hd on December 10, 2024 at 8:17 pm

I LOVED this interview and hearing the comparisons also seeing the tent gear- Very helpful! I love the advice to keep it simple 🙂 So encouraging – I dream about RVing but can’t afford it at the moment- this was wonderful info- Thanks SO much!

  26. @515aleon on December 10, 2024 at 8:20 pm

Sounds like it works really great for them, but wouldn’t work so well for me. However, I have been working on a tent setup that would–nicer tent (Gazelle T-3 or 4) you can stand up in; put a cot in it, even a little heater; also a little more robust cook set up–still nothing nuts. You can put a little cassette toilet in such a tent–or in a separate little popup and use a small solar shower. I’m 73 and want some more comforts. I might still go for something like TAG or Scamp.

  27. @bsandey on December 10, 2024 at 8:24 pm

Tents are great if you really want to experience nature. But setting up the campsite can be a lot more involved than a travel trailer. I still have a couple tents, and probably will go out at some point for nostalgia reasons with a tent someday, and remind myself why I like my small travel trailer more – Easier to set up (park, level, and done), and much more comfortable bed. But as mentioned in the video, tents are great if you’re on a low budget – equipment costs less than an RV, you can use practically any vehicle (I’ve even seen people hauling their gear on a motorcycle), or even backpack your way in to the campsite, and with the thin walls, you feel like you are more a part of nature. And with an RV, even a small one, you get to bring more luxuries of home with you, such as a comfy bed, toilet and shower, indoor kitchen and dining area, etc. Plus it feels more protected from nature. You do need a larger vehicle to tow usually, more power with the larger you go. So it can get quite pricey not only with the RV itself, but if you need a new vehicle. Another option not mentioned is a cross between the two – A pop-up camper. We had one for many years, and enjoyed it quite a lot. It’s got the more comfy beds up off the ground, an indoor kitchen and dining area, and some have toilets and even a show on larger models. And with the canvas walls, you get some feeling of being part of nature. The price is more than a tent, but is less than a RV (some high end pop-ups can be as much as a small RV, though), and you usually don’t need quite as large of a vehicle to tow it with – A SUV or small pickup will work for most models.

I’ve done camping in all three – Tent, pop-up, and travel trailer. They are all as much fun as you make them out to be, and I have many memories from each of them. I’m at an age that I enjoy a few extra luxuries when camping, but also don’t want to pack up the house to go camping, so I have a small RV (really small – 13 foot from rear to hitch). But I still have my tent and the gear I use with that, and might get an itch to use it again for nostalgia reasons.

  28. @elindenstein on December 10, 2024 at 8:26 pm

After 2 years with a "nice" pop-up camper, I think after the most recent unexpected issue, I am going to be going back to tent camping in the next couple of months. Way less stress, way cheaper, and my experience with tents was always pretty great.

  29. @CrazyEmptyNest on December 10, 2024 at 8:27 pm

Overlanding is the happy medium! We enjoy the tent for the ability to hike into remote areas away from tourists and be secluded. We enjoy our RV for the conveniences like A/C and yes, the toilet! Great video comparison Randi!

I have a headlamp with a red filter that flips down. It is great for maintaining your night vision. I learned about it from a pilot who flies at night.

  33. @elizabethrose3667 on December 10, 2024 at 8:32 pm

We have a large tent. With a porch. It was a close out at sams for 75.00.used twice but my husband is getting set to retire. We will probably use it more. We have discussed getting a small towable rv. If we sell our boat. If we find we like traveling.

  34. @TerryX2Explore on December 10, 2024 at 8:32 pm

Nice tips! We always used a double tall air mattress but we had a big cabin tent. I always had to have an extra room for my (blush) potty! We loved tent camping at the time but definitely prefer RV camping now (although Terry has talked me into backpacking with a small tent) ! 😃

  35. @HappyPlaceDiaries on December 10, 2024 at 8:32 pm

Great Video Randi! I was an avid Backpacker and did about 40 years "tent camping".. Our current style of Camping "Glamping" is so much better for us now.. Can’t really see us going back to the tent. Great comparison and nice look at pro’s and cons. Thanks for sharing.

  36. @dianejennings6044 on December 10, 2024 at 8:33 pm

I tent camped from childhood through my 30s. Now we have a 5th wheel and I would never go back to a tent 😉
