I’ve been an avid birder since the age of four. My dad loved the outdoors and we would spend all day together looking at birds. He gave me my first real binoculars, on my seventh B-day, that I still have today. My Dad passed, but I continue the journey in his honor. I carry my cell and play bird songs which attract various birds, and also have an Audubon bird caller that I wear around my neck like a piece a jewelry. So I can be be ready no matter where I am. Thank you Dad, for encouraging me to explore the world and appreciate nature wherever it can be found, even if it’s in your own backyard

I love birding! My list is about 1200 species, which isn’t much compared to the hardcore birder lists. But I’m really happy with what I’ve seen.
Also it’s a great feeling when you go out looking for a specific species and you find it!
And even better when you get good views of its natural behavior.
The best species I’ve seen is the Lord Howe island woodhen. There are only about 200 of them left. The one I saw came right up to me and began pecking my shoe!
Because they are an island species, they are very tame and not scared of humans.

For those in the UK, https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/ is a great resource.
Birding is surely more of a past-time than a ‘sport’.

  28. @ThaGlittersAintGold on April 8, 2025 at 2:37 am

There isn’t anything wrong with old school. A family friend just bought me a 2nd edition Peterson field guide for western birds from 1990. The book is older than me but luckily the life list hasn’t been marked in at all and I intend on using it. The illustrations are great and the feel of the book makes birding feel that much more authentic. However, I do find that apps can be useful. Ultimately, to each their own but I know I love just going outside and being with the birds. Great video!

Nature presents: birding somehow gets prostituted worse than it already is.
