I haven’t been FLY fishing in almost 30 years, thought it would be like riding a bike, but…NO. Thanks for the awesome quick guide, I just had to get back to the basics! I’ll watch your other vids now, I have two weeks till my upcoming trip. Tight lines y’all!
Nice video, thank you. Beautiful catch, glad it happened in this video.
Bro, this is literally the best video out there on casting and I am not kidding.
Lets Go Edmonton want to see McDavid raise Lord Stanley
Thanks, Just got my first fly rod setup and now it’s time to start casting, very good tips that are easily digestible.
What rod holder are you using?
I love how you don’t make it seem like this crazy difficult thing like other youtube tutorials do
Question. Do you use a cover on the reel handle to make it easier to use? I think Mad River calls it a Knucklehead.
My grandfather taught me when I was a kid and I haven’t fly fished in almost 20 years . Finally getting a new one and definitely need a refresher
My dad was an amazing caster, really took for granted what he could have taught me but like fathers and son throughout history… if he thought it was cool it must be BOGUS! Oh well maybe in the next life I’ll fly fish with Dad
About to open a pkg this week with my first fly rod kit – Been watching fly stuff for couple months. This is by far, the best quicky on getting the line out, one of the things I was most confused about. I’ve had all the other basics drilled into my brain it’s become instinctive. 10 and 2, that’s not hard to remember as I’ll date myself, those numbers were also important in our youth for another reason in high school.
This filled in some big holes. I’m sure there’s other great ones out there, but I just haven’t seen them. Learned a lot across a broad range, but not getting the line out, the way you explained it. Sometimes, it just takes the right version to click I guess. I feel I’ll be pretty decent off the go with the amount of time I’ve spent going to YouTube Fly Fishing school. Great job man!
Very helpful. Thanks! Really great content.
The girlfriend and I were talking about starting to fly fish next year. Thank you for the great tutorial👍🏻👍🏻
thanks man, i learned a lot from you . next month i go fly fishing for first time and now i know it in theory 🙂
I’d kill the text at the bottom, or at the very least, the typing noise. Doesn’t add much and it’s really distracting from what you’re saying
Fly Fish Dan is kinda hot
👋👋👋
i really need practice with my fly rod again…
This is the way!
Just watched your video – I’m PUMPED to go out there and cast like a pro! Thank you for the star wars inspiration – may the force be with you too!
Didn’t help at all
That helps
Hey brother. Sitting here with my kids, and we’re watching your video because they want to learn how to fly fish. Thank you for what you do.
Man, I was PUMPED when you caught that random fish you spotted! What a beauty! Fish was nice, too 😂 thanks for the video, man!
Thumb on the back of the rod actually made a huge difference. Learned something new.
Great video! I am pleased to see that I’ve been on the right track as a self-taught newbie. Just need a bit of fine tuning. Appreciate the lesson. 👊🏼
Wanting to get into Fly fishing and been watching beginner casting videos for days and some that was 30 mins long and never got to the point, would also assume the people watching knew how much line to pull out etc. you got to the point and actually went step by step. Just a great video easy to follow. Some people just don’t know how to teach others. You did so good. Thank you! New sub!
I wish I could do this but Everytime I cast, my flys hit the grass behind me and then I lose my flies… it’s too frustrating
Oh wow I been out here casting like crazy and putting my line on the water then full casting again. I didn’t even know about false casting .
Love how you caught that while teaching us!
From the comments, it looks like I stumbled across the best vids first! Thanks! Step-Dad just got me my first fly rod and we are headed out to fish for sockeye on the Klutina in an hour. Never touched one before so I’ll be cramming your videos between now and then. Wish me luck!
I tried for the first time today and caught 3 small brown trouts before losing my fly. I cant wait to go out again

Bless you holy fuck. I been kinda raw dawging the fly fishing and while successful I needed some help getting that line out further. Went right out to the driveway to test out the techniques you showed and I have improved tremendously in a single false cast😄.
I was watching this zoomed in by mistake and the key stroke sounds were confusing the heck out of me.
Very helpful thank you!
Oh my gosh I tried casting fly fishing rod today for the first time, i made like 5 mistakes in every single cast, this video made my life so much easier, thank you buddy
Goodbye bench stones.
Muchas gracias. ¡Muy buen video amigo! Saludos desde Chile. 🇨🇱
I tried these suggestions and they worked. Mostly because they are common sense. Helped to look at the back cast, which I had never tried. It isn’t that complicated when you get the idea.
Very nice video , this morning I went to the river to do a bit of fly casting I hadn’t picked up a fly rod in years , I found it felt like my main line was sticky to slid through the runners , best I could do maybe15-20 feet and it was labouring work to get it there with lots of false cats , I’m thinking maybe some Vaseline on the runners and see if that resolves the line problem other than that yes I need practice.👍
This is probably the most efficient tutorial I’ve watch on fly casting in YouTube
About to start fly fishing! Thanks for this great video.
Thank you so much sir. I’m excited to get back out there this weekend!
I’ll just stick to my spincast haha
Going on first trip soon and this is first how-to video I’ve watched. Catching that fish sure adds to your credibility. Will be following. Wish me luck in Alaska.
I dont fly fish but it lowkey seems so fun and that fish was just perfect
That ‘thumb’ tip is always the first thing I tell new fly fishers. I don’t know whether to describe it as leverage or something else, but you are so much more steady for using it.
I have a 9ft 5wt rod with 7”5 ft 5x leader. What size fly should I use?. I put on a fly and didn’t get far “distance”. I’m a super beginner… thanks.
