Family of 5 Living Off-Grid on a Remote Tropical Island
This family lives completely off-grid on a remote tropical island called Uepi in the Solomon Islands. They collect rainwater for all of their freshwater needs, they catch fish and grow as much fresh food as they can (including a homemade hydroponic system) on Uepi and on surrounding islands, and at the moment their electricity comes from diesel generators – although they are making the switch to solar power in the next 12 months! For work, the family runs a small island resort where folks can go scuba diving and snorkelling in a beautiful marine environment.

Jase grew up on the island after his parents fell in love with the Solomons in the ’80s and moved there from Australia. Katie visited the island as a volunteer and fell in love with Jase on her trip, and after a long distance relationship, she moved to the island and they’ve since had 3 children together.
Living on a remote island looks like an absolutely beautiful lifestyle, but it definitely isn’t easy. Being isolated means limited options for socializing, it means that everything has to come from very far away, it means a lot of travel to access health care, and it means you’re often on your own to figure out problems like why the generator isn’t running. It’s a lot of work and responsibility to keep things running smoothly all year round.
Luckily, the family has help from a lot of skilled locals from neighbouring islands who work at the resport as chefs, carpenters, housekeepers and in the dive shop.
We loved getting a glimpse at this unique way of life and appreciate Katie and Jase sharing their story with us!

We did this ourself, and by that I mean my parents did it and now we use our resort staff as our builders, why pay two wages.
What a story… Thank you for the video.
Hope they are growing their own weed out there too lol
Life lottery

How much to set up your dream ?
the things you can do when you have infinite money to spare
❤
Where do they go to school?
I’m confused. Do they pay any taxes to the Solomon island government or did they just get lucky that no one bothered his parents when they decided to move to an uninhabited island?
You should have show the beach house
Let me know if you need a new person to help with the kids lol
Wow! It’s so be3autiful! Love this island!
You are doing a wonderful thing with this channel.
Wow. What a beautiful place. I grew up on an island as well and it’s the best childhood
I was a little concerned at first, but this turned out to be a good way of living ‘off-grid’. I was going to say ‘realistic’ but this obviously is unattainable for most of us. But 30min from other people and some kind of civilisation. Internet. Postal service. Power. Comfortable house etc. Sweet.
use solar for electricity..
I guess if you’re rich yeah…totally possible
The closest i have been to being on remote tropical islands like this is in The Seychelle Islands in the indian ocean
Being rich must be hard
This man is a multimillionaire. The cost of logistics for this project is high… Just imagined getting all the supplies into and from distant ports. Think about the size of that generator.. Do you think the locals carried that 2-tone generator on their backs..😂
may i pls be your 2nd island me-maw?!!!💗💗💗💗💗
Awesome video. Lovely lifestyle. I’m 82 this year and would have so enjoyed your lifestyle.. Thanks for sharing.
"edge of the earth"
uhm…are they flat earthers?
OWESOM E I WISH I WAS CLOSE AND SEE YOU
Wow! How extraordinary life to live.
The amount of personal "space" made me feel quite uncomfortable watching this
posh of the grid .. a new chapter . maffafanculo…va.
A true paradise on earth, a healthy life without violets and without harm. Amazing.
I think they used to call this colonialism
Not in a million years would I live in an island like that!! There is a saying that goes no man is an island. Hurricane’s!!
I always wonder why in these rainforest like areas, there is so less good soil for farming. All this green around….isnt it komposting from time to time? 🤔
It seems that ‘The Blue Lagoon’ has found a happy ending 💖
"living off grid" and "our staff" is the funniest combination of things, people will just call stuff whatever now lmao
Amazing ❤
Thanks guys for the effort
Absolutely Love this Life. Awesome and Amazing for you and your family. Thank you for sharing 💪💪💪
😂😂❤❤ que felices se ve esa familias no dejen alejar los niños de la orilla del mar ❤❤❤

Thanks for watching! We are excited to share this story about a family living off-grid on a remote island because it’s one of those things that we think a lot of people have imagined doing. We think it’s interesting to see what is required in terms of systems and services, and what some of the pros and cons are.
We collaborated with Katie and Jase to make this video about their island life not because it’s an option that is accessible to everyone (we wish!), but precisely because it’s so different that we found it really cool and unique.
Katie and Jase work really hard at everything they do, from raising a family and managing a resort to participating in the builds and creating YouTube videos – and they couldn’t do it without the help of Jase’s parents and the staff they employ from neighbouring islands who also work hard to make it all possible. They gave credit multiple times to their parents and staff in the video and we apologize if that wasn’t immediately clear.
To address a few concerns we’ve seen in the comments:
-When they said it’s just them out there, they had just mentioned everyone who lives on the island with them (including Jase’s parents and the resort staff) and what they meant by saying “it’s just us out here” is that there are no villages on Uepi Island and that the surrounding islands are uninhabited.
-Uepi Island has 50 staff who are on shift rotations so they are not all living and working on the island full-time or at the same time.
-The term off-grid means not being connected to an electrical power grid, which is different from being self-sufficient. We made sure to make the distinction in the video by including information about their off-grid systems, and also about how they do have to rely on importing certain things like diesel, some building materials, some food, etc. They are off-grid but not self-sufficient, and plan to convert to solar power in the next 12 months.
-The Uepi Island Staff are employed, paid, and very skilled at what they do, and to speculate otherwise is unfair and diminishes their efforts.
Thanks again for watching and happy exploring 🙂
This isn’t off grid. When you have black staff, its a compound with hired help. Get it right.
Wow what an incredible way for your family to live!! ❤
