Essential Beginner Fishing Lures To Catch More Fish

Essential Beginner Fishing Lures To Catch More Fish

It’s easy to spend hundreds of dollars on a tackle box of pretty lures, but you really don’t need all that. The best way to become a better angler is to focus on a small number of lures and get really good at using those. With time, you will want to move up to more lures and more colors, but they are not essential for beginners to start catching a lot of fish and having a lot of fun. This video discusses my top 5 beginner fishing baits and how/when to use them.

Rapala shad rap shallow running is my favorite, I just love fishing it around vegetation and over underwater rock piles where fast moving water meets slow moving water. Absolute walleye and asp magnet, almost all colors work (would recommend the ones that match local baitfish) but by far most useful for me was chartreuse one.
Then I snagged it and broke it off.

Really curious now to try a plastic minnow type lure for its versatility. I love seeing the variety of nature and want to try to catch every local species at least once, hopefully using best practices I can learn to make post-catch mortality least likely. Your videos have been really helpful for a newbie like me, thank you.

Decent recommendations that will work great for a multi-species angler.

First few years of kayak fishing I used mostly round head jigs with a grub or twister tail. Eventually I started throwing spinnerbaits and some other lures more. I definitely think it’s good to spend time with a few lures and gain some confidence in them.

roostertails always seem to work when theyre not biting

Wish i saw this video when i started fishing, it took almost 1 AND A HALF YEARS to catch my first fish, still haven’t caught any fish then because the lakes where I live in texas theres A LOT of lakes that are REALLY pressured

  14. @junietwoknees on January 9, 2025 at 9:16 pm

I’ve been getting into fishing and building a box, mine looks a lot like this tutorial does. First luck was corn under a bobber for a bluegill, then i started bobbing one of those pink/white mini-mite jigs in a small pond and depending on the day you can hook a perch or a chub every other cast.

  15. @Tie_Rod_End on January 9, 2025 at 9:18 pm

Can you make a video on how to fish without bobbers using lures? I am a beginner and want to learn to fish without a bobber.

Thank you for all of the help. I have the same tackle box from 10 years ago, and i lost all of my good stuff at the bottom, by sending my shiner hooks down like a numpty. I just restocked on everything my box needs, and ready to go get the skunk.

I have been learning an awful lot sbout fishing rigs, and my rod. But i get nothing at the spots now. It took a dozen trips to realize that it was my hooks. It was feeljjg like i caught more fish when i knew less, and just had my experience. But now i have hooks, im ready to go use your advice. Rewatching your videos to fully digest all of it.

Im just getting into fishing. Im starting basic.. like really basic.
Ive got an ugly stick rod with some light line and basic lures.
One question i have is, do you add a weight to these lures? Or is thebweight of the lure enough?

Hi, I’ve been fishing for a while now, since I was 4, but I still do need some tips on what baits to use in what conditions, I mostly go for bluegill, sometime I’ll throw a spoon around for pike and sometimes I’ll use minnows for walleye and perch, but I still need tips on how to use some lures and fish certain conditions great video btw

Fish with the Mepps Comet Mino please

  34. @Zelliant on January 9, 2025 at 9:44 pm

Another awesome bait for beginners is a simple 2” tube jig. You can fish it Carolina rig or on it’s own, it will catch me crappie and perch all day long in the pnw.

Not sure how you’re getting those wonderful shots underwater of the lures but you need to keep that a trade secret! Best footage on Youtube.

Got a video idea for you — "Beginner Tips: Avoiding Poorly Designed Lures"

I dropped $70 on just five Luhr-Jensen Kwikfish lures because a professional California salmon-fishing guide swore by them in a MeatEaters episode. He dropped the lures behind his boat and trolled them upstream, got bit by Chinooks quite a lot.

I bought the same lures and used them to shore fish in Alaska… turns out the lures are garbage when casted. Each and every one of my six Kwikfish lures tangled frequently in the air because the dual treble hooks are engineered too close together and/or are too large.

For nearly $15 apiece you’d think Luhr-Jensen could have solved that problem for me ahead of time (never did get a salmon on them, by the way, even after fixing the tangling hooks issue).

Now I always check if a lure’s treble hooks can self-tangle before buying it. You simply hold the lure and try to tangle the trebles by hand. If the trebles overlap at all, consider a different lure.

Also I’ve given up on Bluefox Vibrax in-line spinning lures. The wire running down its center, acting like a spine, seems to get bent a lot in my well-organized tacklebox no matter how much I baby them. They also never seem to fit in my tackle box’s slots properly, as if the lures are always just a bit too big. Going to explore the Mepps lures you’ve suggested.
