Great tips Frazier! Very useful information friend. The one thing I would add is to setup camp well before dark. (Made that mistake before.)

I live that in the first 10 secs, he specifies a "tent camper"….the only way to camp impo. I think the RVs and little campers arent really camping. (I can understand using them in the winter, which we dont do)

Another thing to help keep camping easier is to have dedicated storage bins and dedicated kitchen equipment. My wife and I bought 3 large totes to fit most of the gear and kitchen equipment into. That way we don’t have to raid the kitchen for utensils and pans.
Tote 1 – camp fuel, propane tanks, table torch, lights (lanterns, flashlights, solar lights), ropes, tarps, tripod grill, fire starters, table cloth.
Tote 2 – propane stove, utensils, pots, pans, enamel plates/bowls/cups/silverware, other kitchen stuff
Tote 3 – blankets, first aid, bug spray, and we’ll add batteries and games.
Then when its time to pack the truck we grab the totes, a cooler for the perishables, canvas bags for non perishables, luggage, tent, screen dome canopy, cots, cot pads, sleeping bags, tiki poles, and tarp poles.
Much easier with dedicated storage and dedicated kitchen gear. Get your storage bins and kitchen utensils either at dollar tree or walmart to keep costs low. Ocean state job lot has stuff for cheap like batteries vs going to a home improvement store. Camping equipment is an investment so there is some upfront cost if you like camping.
I DONT recommend going cheap on your tent – buy quality.
Cots are better than air mattresses because it won’t leak or tear and you have a foot of space from the ground, and pads for them make it almost like you’re on a real mattress. Buy quality cots and pads.

I’m always learning from you. I just bought the same wagon you have and use the REI Kingdom 6 as my long term camping tent. Enjoy getting out camping everyone!

  14. @TheJakeman789 on December 21, 2024 at 1:15 am

Itโ€™s just lovely when you have a nice campground with RVs and then people come in with the tacky tents and ruin the scenery of the woods.

  15. @franny5295 on December 21, 2024 at 1:16 am

I’ve saved this so I can go back a few times and make notes. Disorganization requires chaos. If you’re organized, it doesn’t matter that you don’t know what you’re doing, it’ll look like it. In this case, that means that we’ll have a much better trip for having crossed your path so if you’re still around, thank you…

Do you have any recommendations for tent stakes being driven in gravel? Almost all campsites in TN have gravel lots.

Great video Frazier. One more thing about trees. LOOK UP for dead limbs. When I was in DAR Campground in 2019 in VT, the site that the ranger recommended when the monsoonal rain started limbs were falling on my car and due to marsh environment loads of mosquitos. Luckily the campground was not crowded so I just moved as I had not set up camp yet and did not like the looks of things to start with. Was an interesting experience. Half a pound of nails and hammer would help for some of your setup situations on asphalt etc; you know times when the normal tent stakes get bent. Some ideas. You definitely are the Avid Tent Camper. So glad to have reached out to you years ago. I love your books on camping also.

Buy a 20×16 tarp and use it as a roof for your tent. Have one end lower than the other (where it makes sense) so if it rains your tent doesnt get very wet, if at all, and you have a dry area to sit outside the tent.
