A Walk For All Ages | Hiking in the Lincolnshire Wolds | South Thoresby | Discovering Local History

This walk is suitable for all the family!

Arctic Monkeys? Founder of Harvard? Marcus Aurelius, Nero and Hadrian? Discoveries made on Hike! Discovering Local History | Family Friendly Walks | Lincolnshire Churches

I met up with a good friend and we set off for a hike in the Lincolnshire Wolds. We started at South Thoresby, the home of Chapel Studios where the Arctic Monkeys recorded their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. It has also been used by various artists such as Kaiser Chiefs, Paul Weller, Editors, Del Amitri, Ocean Colour Scene, Thunder, Shed Seven, Machine Head, The Darkness, Dodgy and Wet Wet Wet. It is currently up for sale for 1.7 million!

The route then led to Belleau, a small hamlet in Lincolnshire with a big history. It was once the home of Sir Henry Vane the Younger, a former Parliamentarian, Governor of Massachusetts and one of the original founders of Harvard University. He was eventually beheaded by Charles II who deemed him to be a threat to his recently reinstated monarchy.

The hike then continues to Swaby where a hoard of Roman coins were unearthed containing the heads of Marcus Aurelius, Nero and Hadrian, some of which are in the British Museum.

Then finally before the walk concludes, we explore the ruins of the Church of St Andrew in the old medieval village of Calceby. It was a great hike and one I would thoroughly recommend.

Brilliant. Thought my bro would be incognito!! Comma butterfly. Did you study history or geography at Uni Gav? Lifelong learning though- of course 🙂

Thoroughly enjoyed watching your walk through my home patch! Thank you.
Now that my young dog is old enough for a decent walk, I must lace up my walking boots and do the walk to Swaby again…perhaps on a day when the sun comes out to play.

Beautiful day for a walk, and another interesting route. The Wolds certainly have plenty to offer the walker.
