DIY Portable Camping Hammock Stand

DIY Portable Camping Hammock Stand

If you like to car camp and want to use a hammock, some parks wont let you tie off to trees. Have no fear, hear is the solution. About $65 and an hour of build time and you can make this double tripod portable hammock stand. One thing I left out is the para-cord leg stabilizer. I drilled holes in each of the legs about 20 inches from the bottom and i ran a 10 foot piece of para-cord through them to prevent the legs from separating and dropping yours truly on the ground.

99725 sure would love one of these chairs to use after building a stand

A fence post and too much wood does not equal portable just because you can ultimately disassemble and put in a car.

Are there plans listed anywhere?  Yeah I’m one of those guys 🙂

Enjoyed this! Took me a while to figure out what you were doing with vagina hardware, but then I figured it out.

I asked at Holliday Late State Park in Appomattox and was told that they will allow hammocks on trees as long as tree straps are used. 😀

Does it matter that the 2×2’s are 6 feet or can I make it 7 feet and get the same results. I’m 6 foot 3, 260lbs. I just don’t want to hang too low.

Nice video, I have noticed on other stand I have seen on HF that most folks have the legs tied together toward the bottom. Is this to keep the legs from spreading to far and are you going to do the same or do you not find it is needed ?

I did have an idea pole on top of a car running hammock out windows rig a window cover to keep in atmosphere poof portable hotel room? Probably would dent the car with my weight but that could be engineered out. I know this Prius PIEHV had atmosphere controlled when you plug them in people are going to use these cars as RV when they rig them up to do sleep in them the less you change the car the better he who makes it work with a simple kit will make bank.

Let your Virginia State Park management know how Florida is now letting us hammockers hang in state parks with tree huggers. The only thing we have to change is to use huggers with our tarp suspension or attach the tarp to the hammock suspension’s huggers.

its real cool extremely handy idea nothing like a hamic to chill out in 🙂

    Doesn’t look portable

  16. Jim Costner on September 16, 2019 at 8:20 pm

One more tripod and two more spacer rails and you could be hanging two more hammocks.

Great idea looks awesome! Do you think if you counter sink those washers, bolts that you will hack saw off, would weaken the structure?

I checked a lot of handbooks with woodworking plans. Instructions from woodprix are the best I think.

This stand works great with all my hammocks. I have used it with my WBBB, my ENO Double nest, my Clark NX-250 and a Hennessy.

Back packer Dave I have one question what do you do for mosquito netting I live in Florida I need mosquito netting over my hammock

  23. VABCKPKR on September 16, 2019 at 8:30 pm

I will shoot a video later today with the hammock attached. Not sure about the tripod question and the center pole is necessary to keep the tripods from collapsing in on you.

Well crap!! Calculus, binary numbers, and now this… Great ideas I’ve had before I was taught them. I think I was born in the wrong century.

Good idea but I’m a fat guy so I’m using steel pipes I got from scrap yard….

  27. fred freiberger on September 16, 2019 at 8:37 pm

thanks I was thinking when I do get a hammock of this type of device to hang one like you said a lot of parks frown on you using there trees and ours tend to put you on one spot with limited trees

  28. Greg on September 16, 2019 at 8:39 pm

Wow, really well documented. Thank you for filming this.

Thanks for the ideas and how to on making the turtle dog stand. It finally turned out awesome. I would add a picture to this if I could figure out how. Lol

Hey, thanks for the update, looking good. Enjoy your trip. Maybe you will run into the park ranger and strike up a conversation with and be able to show him some tree straps we use and even show him that they protect the tree. Who knows, maybe you can talk him into bending the rules or maybe changing them in the future.

  31. jmklamm on September 16, 2019 at 8:44 pm

Would love to see the hammock in use now. Could this be done using just sturdy tripods and no central pole?

  32. GEAUX FRUGAL on September 16, 2019 at 8:45 pm

I thought you were going to make tripods that would be tent staked into the ground no need for center pole? There are all sorts of ways to go with this I guess.

Flipping the Bird at yah.."Your #1" LOL

  34. S Mullings on September 16, 2019 at 8:48 pm

Can one of those tripods be made a little larger to be used as a hammock chair stand?

  35. VABCKPKR on September 16, 2019 at 8:48 pm

You have to put the first part of the address in.

Nice video, I have a question though. The fence posts, was that actually a chain link fence top rail? I went to the box store and the posts didn’t fit together but the top rail did…I wouldn’t want the bar breaking if I get the wrong thing, but I want to make it more portable, and a 13 ft pole won’t fit in the car!

  37. Ian on September 16, 2019 at 8:50 pm

Question; could I attach my continuous loops, which are at theends of my gathered end hammock, directly to a drilled in hook attatched to the hinge with little to no stress problems?

  38. GEAUX FRUGAL on September 16, 2019 at 8:50 pm

Rather than tent pegs you could have ropes that attach to the base to prevent expansion? That way you could set these on any surface.

  39. kyletango on September 16, 2019 at 8:50 pm

I think you meant to say "fence rail." Not fence post.

  40. SDRuemmele on September 16, 2019 at 8:51 pm

Love it! Cant wait to make one myself!

  41. R P on September 16, 2019 at 8:51 pm

Beautiful hammock stand you created! Your video taping sucks. I gave a thumbs up.

  42. VABCKPKR on September 16, 2019 at 8:52 pm

Thanks and yes you have to run some cordage through the legs or they will separate and you will end up on the ground. I had the holes drilled but hadn’t run the cord yet. Here is a video with the cord and hammock on. You have to put the first part of the address in.

Thank God Utube lets me fast forward…thank God ipad lets me mute.

  44. guggi uggi on September 16, 2019 at 8:56 pm

Although the overall idea of a hommock stand is great, the way you went about it was insanely overcomplicated..

You know, there’s thing thing called rope? It’s awesome, you should try it.. 😛

No but seriously, a real tripod (3 poles and a tripod lashing) would be more durable, the legs wouldn’t be able to slide out on you, even without cord between the legs, it would look better, be more simple and thus not as prone to failure, and most importantly be much much stronger.
    Hinges and bolts, Bah!

  45. Chris R on September 16, 2019 at 8:57 pm

the shackles are rated for 750lb, but what about the load rating for the hinges from which they hang? weakest link and all that.

  46. iliketech2 on September 16, 2019 at 8:59 pm

Thanks for this video, I’m 225 lbs. will the 2×2 hold me? and what does the hinge look like that connected the 2×2’s? thanks
