Saddle Hunting Overview! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

Saddle Hunting Overview! EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!

What can you learn about saddle hunting when you spend over 10 years hunting 150+ days a year? Let’s find out!! Today’s video is the first installment of many, to help you “get the hang” of saddle hunting, in a mini-series that we’re calling “Saddle Hunting 101”. In this video, we’re tackling the basics of Saddle Hunting, and in the upcoming videos, we’re going to dive deep into every detail we know!

In this video you’ll find the following:

0:47 – “What’s a Saddle?”
1:12 – “How Does a Saddle Work?”
3:01 – “How Do You Climb The Tree?”
4:36 – “How Do You Shoot From The Saddle?”
5:30 – “How Comfortable Is a Saddle?”
6:-07- “What Do I Do With My Feet?”
7:54 – “Saddle vs. Treestand”
8:23 – “Which Saddle Should I Buy?”

Don’t get spotted in the tree, and make sure your gear is more ready than you are. First Lite is the only way to go – check out all of their gear here: https://www.firstlite.com

Make sure to check out our buddies at Mathews Archery for the best bows in the business: https://www.mathewsinc.com/

What good would a bow be without a sight so bright you can see it at any time of day? And what good would a bright sight be without being as tough as a $2 steak from Dennys??!! HHA Sports does all that and more for us – Check them out here: https://www.hhasports.com/

Stop sitting on the front of the tree. Add some angle to your dangle and get as comfortable as you never thought possible in the tree. Hunt from a saddle!! Check out our buddies at Tethrd: https://tethrdnation.com/

We might be hanging in trees in backyards, but our optics are beyond important to us. We need to not only identify deer right away, but also make sure that after the shot, they’ve dropped asap! We trust only one brand of glass, and those are Vortex Optics. Make sure to check them out here: https://vortexoptics.com/

How important is that glass? So important that we trust only the absolute best bino harness in the game to protect them – FHF Gear. Not only do these harnesses protect our optics and rangefinder, but they also are sleek, lightweight, and silent to operate. Plus, they get points for us because they just flat out look cool! Go pick yours out here: https://fhfgear.com/

Know where you stand! It’s always important to know that your on the correct property, but it’s even more important when you’re hunting on postage stamp properties, and tracking deer after the shot. We trust the team over at OnX to make sure we know where we stand. Plus, when we’re keeping track of over a thousand trees to hunt from, there’s no easier way than on your smartphone! Give them a try from the Appstore, or here: https://www.onxmaps.com/

Hey could you touch on DRT, and SRT accent , and maybe what some of that kit looks like, and how it works. Thanks Rob

Great video but I would have enjoyed hearing about other options besides Tetherd. It just came across as a paid advertisement

I’m just getting into bow hunting any tips for me?

Newb question: when using a saddle within a tree which has been previously set-up with climbing sticks (i.e., not a "run-and-gun" set), I’m assuming that one still should be using the lineman’s belt while climbing to ensure maximum safety (unlike an established set of sticks and a tree stand where you’ve previously placed a safety tether with a carabiner and Prusik knot, etc). However, does one ever leave the tree tether in place?

Let’s see a video how you use WE steps. Aider? Swaider? Knaider?

Nice video. Good info. Im new to hunting all together and have decided to saddle hunt as I feel it is the most practical and versitile. Keep the videos coming.

I’m really interested in urban hunting and want to get into saddle hunting, too. I’ve heard you talk about QDMA insurance before—how do you get it to cover every single property you hunt? Do you have to pay the $47 fee for an “additional insured” each time? That seems prohibitively expensive…

Great introduction video! I’m very much looking forward to validating your claim that the Mantis is the best saddle hands down. I have one on order and should be arriving soon. I currently have the Kestrel and can’t believe anything can be better than that. I went with the Kestrel first because it looks more solid and better quality than the Mantis.

I do like the Predator Platform but it’s not perfect. It takes a lot of practice to get it just right about caming it on a tree. And even when that’s done right, the top bracket tends to stray away from the tree. Wild Edge just came out with an attachment for their steps to function as a platform. Should be interesting to see the early reviews. Like you said bossman the best part of saddlehunting is the variation and experimentation that is super fun. And rewarding. Just look at John Eberhart’s success from a saddle.

Last question: how in the heck do you saddle hunt from a tree you can’t even get your arms around? I definitely want to hunt from some monster oaks but getting a teether around a massive circumference is very very difficult unless one has inspector gadget arms.

Questions!!!! What about the bridge failing. I have a tetherd and when in use the same area on the bridge is being used. Do you use a secondary safety besides the bridge or the bridge will hold even through use?

    THANKS IN ADVANCE. Great video

What size mantis do you have?

  16. Aubrey Young on September 16, 2019 at 8:26 pm

This is amazing. I think it was a couple of years ago that I learned about these saddles for the first time. This would be a great way to hunt fast and light in the area I go. I have always wanted to get a tree stand into this area but it’s just too heavy and too far. Definitely looking into this system.

Thank you for this! I’ve been looking for a video like this for awhile. Thinking about using a saddle this year

What straps are you using to hang your gear?

  19. C Price on September 16, 2019 at 8:32 pm

Well, season is approaching and here for some. I’ll encourage you to stay away from the linesman rope that your using. It’s a death trap. If a stick for some reason, kicks out from under you, straight down is were your going. The linesman rope is only good to prevent you from falling backwards. Keep your tether hooked up with a girth hitch AT ALL TIMES. I’ve came up with a better alternative to hunt those straight climbable trees, using my saddle staying girthed to the tree at all times. I’ll attach video. Happy hunting, stay safe.

  21. Seth Coates on September 16, 2019 at 8:35 pm

Taylor, can you do some on the climbing part? How do you climb a tree with lots of limbs or climb past a slit in the tree? People always talk about wanting a tree that is split up high but how do you transition your lineman belt to the smaller part of the tree above the main trunk? Is there a good way to navigate branches, thinking public land or a land owner that doesn’t want limbs cut?

  22. Danny Vilorio on September 16, 2019 at 8:35 pm

Thank you so much for this video explain a lot. Very well thought out. Can’t wait to see what you got in store for the next saddle 101.

  23. Brandon Mescall on September 16, 2019 at 8:41 pm

I’m interested in learning more about the run and gun options for climbing. How many sections a climbing sticks are needed to reach 20’+ and particularly styles that are not “tree puncture” that would be public land legal.

Great video Taylor! My Mantis and Predator arrived several weeks ago. Due to snow up here in Massachusetts and other fatherly obligations, I only had one day to practice at 2 feet up in the back yard. First impression..WOW! We have a bunch of saddle hunters gathering here in MASS…Massapalooza!… at the Auburn Sportsman’s Club on April 27th organized by Peterk1234 on saddlehunter.com (yes…the brains behind the knaider). Would be great if you could join us for a fun day of climbing methods, lots of grub, and stories of the big beasts we slay.
