For me it’s definitely any kind of pasta carbonara
Bacpackers pantry Pad Thai is a favorite of mine. I love the Mountain House meals you mentioned and am looking really forward to trying the others. Sintax77 talks about Packit Gourmet Cheese Burgers being really delicious. Thanks for the videos!
I really like the mountain pepper steak and rice and the chili Mac.
Thx, now I’m hungry.
Mountain house is a very bad idea. Any freeze dried food is bad. The sodium content is ridiculous. Not a healthful choice either. Your body needs to replenish electrolytes, however consuming that much salt in 7 days is not good for anyone. Take some additional planning time and make your own meals by dehydration. Or make trips to the grocery store at resupply stops and gather items to pack that are light and better for you. Back packers best friend is a decent dehydrator and freezer bags. Trailing from experience. Water is heavy.
Been using Heather’s Choice breakfasts from Anchorage AK (about 530 cal per meal, Protein 14g

I am from Ohio and something that tastes like grandma’s biscuit and gravy is a perfect meal any time lol
The biscuits and gravy meal is my favorite. 😍
The lasagne is great but getting your spork or spoon clean is a full-time job afterward. That cheese must have super glue as an ingredient.
I start my day with a berocca tablet and later a coffee flavoured meal replacement which I shake up once I’ve packed up. Though the day I’ll eat various nuts in line with keto diet recommendations as well as my own beef jerky I’ve made. At days end I’ll have my home made dehydrated meals as I’ve found that I can make about 5-7 meals for the price of one store bought meal from a hiking shop. Daily weight of food about 400 grams and for those still in the Dark Ages that’s about 14 ounces.
You can buy Mountain House in large cans for a major discount, then you can scoop it out into individual bags for your trips. So much cheaper.
Im thinkinf about dehydrating some veggies and make veggie soup on trail 🤔
I concur bisquits and gravy. And blue berries and granola. Back Packers pantry has some really good curry dishes I like the spice
Backpackers pantry shepherds pie is my favorite
Hi Dixie! I’m a little late on this one… But is there something with a little less sodium? Last September I spent 15 days up in the CO Rockies. Even with the 2 servings per package, I lost 10 lbs.
You know what’s great about cooking at home? you can also eat whatever food for whatever meal. Last time I checked, Biscuits and Gravy for dinner in a house didn’t kill you.
I am glad you mentioned Harmony House. I am not a fan of their pre-made soups, but I mostly make up my own backpacking meals and their beans and vegetables are in my opinion the BEST! I love their backpacking kit.
i never understood why those meal packages are so big. i have to cut them in half to access the food. they could literally be half in size but i guess that’s bad marketing.
8:15 I wanted to highfive you through my phone!!! Montreal Chicken is amazing in salmon crochettes!
You have the best video’s🤗
I can handle almost any freeze dried backpacking meal, but I can’t do eggs. I have my limits. LOL
Sorry …Not sure if you answered this already:
Did you find that your ate the entire 2.5 serving size (Mountain House) or did you divide them into two meals? Thx
I really love Wild Zora https://wildzora.com/collections/paleo-meals-to-go Their meat and veggie bars are so good too and you can get them at Thrive Market https://thrivemarket.com/brand/wild-zora
My wife and I love the Biscuits and Gravy and I set a high bar when it comes to a biscuit or gravy. Yummy!! I have tried a couple of the others and thumbs up to the Mountain house brand. The other brands I have not tried but I trust your review.
I’m from Tennessee and hear it all the time, but I could listen to your sweet southern voice all the way to Maine…
Mountainhouse ice cream sandwich is my all time favorite
you eat any of this ay home 😀
Outstanding…
When you say "Ranch" chili, you are talking about a ranch dressing flavor, are you? God, ranch dressing is awful.
Agreed that Lasagna was heaven in the Cascades completely surprised me
Move ‘ aside what you don’t eat ..I will
I took peak refuel on my last trip. Amazing tasting.
I remember as a 7th grader, riding the bus and talking to a friend about what to eat on the trail. The girl behind us…so confused…said why do you guys talk about camping food all the time. I’m glad you get it! Good food is amazing on trail!
I don’t know what your next adventure is going to be but I am a former Marine and I live in NC. Next week I’m kayaking from High Point to Wilmington NC. Like 350 miles. When I get done with that Im planning on going from Wilmington to The Keys through the ICW. Every one I know is lazy as hell and will come up with every excuse on why they cant go. Would love the company. Thinking about doing the FL keys to raise awareness for the fallen 22 or to raise money for wounded Vets as I am one.
Had them all and they served their purpose. Mountain House lasagna was my go to. These days really into Outdoor Herbivore. Good clean carbs.
Not to steal your thunder but the worst meal for me on the trail was macaroni and Tang . We had packed powdered cheddar as well as Tang. At the shelter it was late, darkish and we were very tired. By mistake I added Tang to the macaroni(I’m color blindish especially in low light). After the first bite we almost threw up but you can’t waste trail food. 20 years later I still remember the shelter in Conn. I thought NASA might use it or that Kraft could market it.
Dont know why we keep catering to vegans and vegetarians. Humans are omnivores. Animals eat other animals, get over it.
Take a look at Omeals – self heating
Thank you for sharing Dixie, the cheese stick addition to the Mountain House is something I never thought about. I’m curious though, how long can you keep those cheese sticks in your pack without refrigeration? I’m always worried about carrying cheese as I’m concerned it will go bad in my pack.
My kids n I like to eat the biscut and gravy for breakfast, really good, the in the evening just a little desert that we have found to top off the day, we share apple crisp. So much flavor!
I’ve tried two of the ones you’ve mentioned while canyoneering in Southern Utah, and it really does hit the spot! Delicious! I buy these for emergency food storage as well.
lasagna out of a bag?? as a swiss close to italy I’m crying right now
Hey 3 out of 5 are my favorites also!! I enjoy MH chicken and mashed potatoes also, but splitting the components isnt as quick
Not sure if you mentioned it, but, after you put the hot water in the pouch and zip it up, you can put it in your vest to warm you up a little bit if its a cool night, Happy Hiking
Awesome list! That polenta pork sausage meal looks good! I gotta try these packit gourmet meals! I like mountain houses beef stew but i have to add spices and their chicken breast with butter mash potatoes is a fav of mine. You can mix the chicken and mash together but i think its better to keep them seperate. Also the grilled chicken patties you get in that one are pretty good size and filling. I tried backpackers pantries recently and one of them was the mash potatoes gravy with beef and didnt care for that one. It was bland and the mash seemed really thick and tough to eat. Totally agree the breakfast meals are great anytime day or night. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe! Hike on!
Nuther awesome Vid! Thanks for posting. Are those 5 meals popular with most hikers or are they specific to your tastes?
Biscuits and gravy are for ANY meal and so are gritz(polenta).
Come on up to NY and play around in the Adirondacks sometime…you’ll love it!
this was super helpful but i hate vegetables, des gus tin
