Battle of the Blankets: Down Camping Blankets Showdown!

Down blankets are great for camping, snuggling, and as extra layers in a backpacking sleep system. There are many to choose from and here I review a couple budget-friendly options: the Get Out Gear “Bouffi” and the Big Blue Mountain “Lazy Bear.”

Do you carry a blanket hiking, camping, or backpacking? What and why?

Hi Doug I recently picked up 2 Double Black Diamond Down Throws from Costco and they measure 60 X 70.. They claim to be 650 fill and I am doing a DIY project making an underquilt. Have a great 4th.

Another great review. Currently using the synthetic version of Cascade Mt Tech Adventure Blanket and it has worked well for warm weather. It’s definitely heavier but still under 2lbs with stuff sack and at 70X58 inches it’s big enough for 2. I’ll be checking into these down versions for sure. Thanks for the great info.

I love my down puffy from Get Out Gear. Like you said, the outer shell is so smooth and soft, and it has such a great puffy, warm, cozy feel to it. In South Carolina I think it’ll make a great summer backpacking quilt, maybe paired with my sleeping bag liner for a little added coziness. Great review!

Would this be good to put under my sleeping bag to insulate from the ground or would wool be better?

  12. @Iverath on July 15, 2025 at 12:52 pm

Those blankets do not look like they’d survive a spark from the campfire, am I wrong?

LOL! 5 year old opinions are important! Great video. Thanks.

Get Out Gear snaps two blankets together as well. 👍

I know it’s been awhile since this was posted, but it’s where I landed while looking for camping blanket reviews. Real down is not suitable for a camping blanket, as you’ll be tightly packing it and that is very bad for down – when compressed, the loft that gives it natural warmth is diminished. Stick with something synthetic for camping, and leave the down for comforters on the bed at home.

The idea of bringing a blanket winter camping is pretty nice. That chair at the end of the video looked interesting as well.

Well done Doug! I’m testing the same get out gear one as well…
