Full Appalachian Trail Gear List! (second time thru-hiker)

All the gear I’m taking with me on my Appalachian Trail thru-hike in 2023! It’s a balance between lightweight and comfort items which I think will perform great for me on the trail! Since this is my second AT thru-hike attempt, some of the gear is the same, but I definitely made a few changes which I’m pretty excited about!

Does your HydraPak Water Bottle leak at the top? I was curious if that is a problem when you take your pack off or lean over to tie your shoes. Your link to the Water Bottle was the 500ML. Did you use the .75L sleeve? Thanks! (I hate using my bladder but I need to be able to drink while moving/not taking my bottle out of it’s pocket on my pack.)

Fanny packs. Seems to be all the rage! Will definately think about them.

Great thanks, this was great! Just get rid of the baby powder, maybe there is a healthier option.

  6. @jand9770 on July 8, 2025 at 12:13 pm

I suggest carrying Neosporin/Antibiotic ointment/cream and small calamine lotion in first aid kit…

Hi Taylor, thank you for the gear list. The link for the shoes shows Saucony Men’s Peregrine 11 Trail Running Shoe. They are leather and not water proof. Just wanted to make sure I opened the correct link. Thanks!

  10. @LivCampbell-du4vk on July 8, 2025 at 12:16 pm

I had a pretty scary experience with a bear the last time I backpacked in the smokies… Do you carry bear spray with you? Or is that something you wait to get until you are in the area?

  11. @jen4492 on July 8, 2025 at 12:18 pm

Do you prefer not to wear hiking boots for specific reasons? I am just curious. Thanks.

  12. @deansmith9232 on July 8, 2025 at 12:18 pm

Are there bears to worry about on that trail? How would you deal with that situation? The gear is wonderful.

Hello, noob here. 😂 Thank you for the video. I’m planning on hiking the PCT from the southern terminus to Lytle Creek. So, this is great.

Not long now brother…… We are so excited for you….. This was a great video

  18. @mayatuck on July 8, 2025 at 12:23 pm

How much of this gear is promotional, other than your t-shirt? Heard you ditched your duplex.

  19. @neo57611 on July 8, 2025 at 12:23 pm

This is my favorite part Taylor. So wish I had time to be out there on the trail. Frustrating I have so many responsibilities and they keep taking my weekend’s away at work…I’m geared up for a good trip so my focus is getting the time and planning the trip out…Just feel like there is so much I’m missing time is precious to me. Hope your very happy so many stories and so many good people on trail. Sending all the best take care Jim Hope you hike the world! ❤ Would like to know how you find time and how exactly you plan a trip out. Do you use a Garmin in reach to help guide or something else. My first trip didn’t get far but learned fast the inability to communicate on my phone. So bought a GPS/satellite device to communicate.

  21. @Fastfoodquick on July 8, 2025 at 12:24 pm

Do you recommend to keep your clothes and sleeping bag in a dry bag or use pack liner after using the hyperlite? Or is the hyperlite waterproof enough to let them items in the pack as is?
    How did it work out?

  22. @TnTontheAT on July 8, 2025 at 12:24 pm

pardon if you already answered this- but you skipped right over underwear. Do you go commando, or some other system?

  23. @christianroth6071 on July 8, 2025 at 12:25 pm

Hey Taylor, i´ve got one question: Do you carry any items for self defence with you? OC, taser or a smaller firearm? Greetings, Christian

  24. @peek-a-moose2491 on July 8, 2025 at 12:26 pm

Great gear list except i quention the Fanny Pack. I would get a slightly heavier one as these packs tend to take a beating. Beware the stuck zipper. Hope the fanny pack worked for you. Let me know and if it was a successful and did not give you problems I’ll stick my foot in my mouth!!!!

  25. @goodvideos.113 on July 8, 2025 at 12:26 pm

You share about the support equipment for your luggage very well.

  26. @iblamesummers on July 8, 2025 at 12:27 pm

  27. @DavidPrinter-t2n on July 8, 2025 at 12:27 pm

Very surprised you dont carry bear spray or a good survival knife.

  28. @colleenconrade3156 on July 8, 2025 at 12:37 pm

Did your be free water container ever break like MOST of the reviews on their website? And you only took one? Did you ever get sick drinking any of the water? What is the best resource for finding out where the trail camps are? Also the stores? I will most likely not have a garmin (unfortunately) – how many pairs of things did you bring ie: socks, shirts, Also how long does the fuel last for the stove or how many did you go through last trip? This would be something you would need to bring several of? Sorry for all the questions I only got the idea last night to do this and then watches your documentary (not individual vids for 2021…. About to watch the 2023 individual vids now and starting pricing/researching etc. today…. Hoping to start SOBO thru starting May/June 2024… I am from NC – so will be nice to hike back home

  29. @manglemorris6940 on July 8, 2025 at 12:37 pm

A-Pa-LA-CHUN. Say it correctly please. It’s disrespectful to the native people of these mountains.

  30. @TheChantybb on July 8, 2025 at 12:38 pm

Hello, could you recommend a water bottle holder for my backpack? I came to your video hoping to find a brand or anything but you didn’t specify what do you use and I am so lost and don’t know what to buy 😩😩😩
    Thank youuuu

  31. @Sherinahubbard69 on July 8, 2025 at 12:39 pm

What selfie stick or tripod do you use?

  32. @JoannaLuisi on July 8, 2025 at 12:40 pm

Hi Taylor! Can you please explain why you choose to hang a food bag vs using a bear canister? Do there tend to be more lockers/boxes for food bags at shelters, or is hanging the more popular option? I’m struggling to decide which food storage option I should invest in, because hanging a bag is logistically annoying but a canister seems heavy to me. Thanks!

  33. @sld2155 on July 8, 2025 at 12:40 pm

It just always amazes me that people go on a lifetime adventure like through hiking the AT, and wear headphones instead of listening to nature. Not to mention, it’s basically dangerous not to hear what’s going on around you. I’ve yet to do it, so I’m not criticizing, it just seems strange to me.

  34. @ImMentallyExhausted on July 8, 2025 at 12:41 pm

One flosser? Why not just actual floss. You can’t reuse the flossers.

  35. @lindadebellis8997 on July 8, 2025 at 12:42 pm

I just started following you & I noticed you wear Saucony. I’ve always liked Salamons for trail running, but I used to wear Saucony for walking/running on the road. So I decided to order the Saucony Peregrine for trail running & hiking. Hope I like them. Thanks

  36. @Shihabdeenrecreationalcyclist on July 8, 2025 at 12:43 pm

How to wash your clothes while on hike

  37. @tanimiller7644 on July 8, 2025 at 12:44 pm

How long does your small fuel tank last? It seems like you mostly boil water for dinners and cook oatmeal in the morning.

  38. @kellyfeld8644 on July 8, 2025 at 12:45 pm

Hi! I’m curious if your cold feet, that you mentioned on your day 7 video, were cold even when using your down booties? 🥶 I’m considering getting down booties and wondered about what ones to get. I’m loving watching your venture!

  39. @megabubblez98 on July 8, 2025 at 12:46 pm

Hello! I have a couple questions.

    1) Why did you choose the single person tent this time, instead of the two person tent?
    2) Why are you bringing a thermometer with you?

  40. @danielle4829 on July 8, 2025 at 12:48 pm

Why did you switch away from the enlightened equipment convert?

  41. @ClayDoogun on July 8, 2025 at 12:49 pm

    no tent?

  42. @markhaneklau5021 on July 8, 2025 at 12:50 pm

    Where’s your firearm?

  43. @suemoore1965 on July 8, 2025 at 12:50 pm

    THANKS FOR SHARING

  44. @davidlourenco8478 on July 8, 2025 at 12:50 pm

little tip: if you keep the towel you use for cleaning cooking utensils snug around the items inside your pot, that´ll keep them from rattling so much. if the towel is wet, it can cause the fuel can to rust so keep that in mind though. great video! 🙂

  45. @jand9770 on July 8, 2025 at 12:51 pm

What size "compression sack" did you go with?

  46. @paulinalouise4502 on July 8, 2025 at 12:52 pm

Tell us about your watch. I want one just like it !

  47. @exfedrichard on July 8, 2025 at 12:55 pm

Girl, Feb..March? Both cold. You will not escape the bubble with this start date but just GO. You can do it🎉

  49. @arielmillaud708 on July 8, 2025 at 12:58 pm

Loved your video! I was wondering if you could make a video about how you vlogged/edited/uploaded your videos on trail? I’m a prospective 2024 thruhiker and I’d like to vlog my journey too but have no idea where to start, and your videos were wonderful! Thank you!

  50. @bartonsky on July 8, 2025 at 1:01 pm

Thank you for the helpful information. Sounds like your are the correct person to look for guidance. I have been hiking w a forclaz 70L from decathlon backpack and very happy w it. I read that 50-60L is better for AT. Should I just get the same backpack in 50L? Would it hurt having the extra space? Thank you for there insight. Decided to order the 50L version of the same model I have now. Should help me keep it simple and less gear as per your recommendations.
