Prepare for Bear: Tips for Camping Safely

You can keep black bears away from your campsite by doing the following:
– Maintain a clean campsite. Put all food scraps always at night or when you leave your campsite.
– Put food scraps and fat drippings in closed containers, not in the campfire.
– Do not cook or eat in your tent.
– Keep food and cooking gear separate from your sleeping area.
– Always store your food securely. Use an airtight bear-proof containers. Backpacks and coolers are inadequate.
– Keep food in closed-up vehicle or hang food at least 10 feet off the ground and five feet out on a limb that will not support a bear.
– Never feed bears.

All good stuff exempt the one about storing food in your car. A hungry bear can and will destroy the interior of your vehicle.

We’re going camping in Allegany National Forest. We’ll be sleeping in a rustic cabin. But, I’m still nervous

Yeah…I was up in the Shanadowa Valley in Virginia. The night before I cooked two big stakes over the fire. And yes I dumped my grease in the fire thinking it would burn it up. The next morning and it was as late as 7:30 AM, I was making coffee over the fire. I heard something from behind my camp chair. It was a frickin year old bear! I chased him down the path then realized this guy may still have a mother around, so I called off the chase. ( another no no, even a year old bear can be more of a handful that a large dog.) These camp grounds in the Shanadowa are maticulous. They even have bear proof food steel boxes for each camp ground, and bear proof trash dumpsters close by. But it was my camp that drew this bear into my spastic spot. Lesson learned. These girls did a great job, thank you.

Very good Video. I would always pay strict attention to something like that when I was camping alone in a place in the woods. But is it as necessary on proper campsites as KOA? I think there are more than 20 other campers all with food. It has to smell no matter what you do.

The acting on this video was on point!

How about don’t sleep in a tent right next to a picnic table where you eat.

Prevent, but deter as well with a portable electric bear fence. 2.4 lbs of kit (the best fence) that brings huge peace of mind.

Gun pepper spray another gun and a rifle motion Detectors set to an alarm ⏰️ and you should be ok 😂
