This is my all time favorite camping lantern I made this Lantern and so can you. It’s simple it’s cheap and it has the best beam diffusion I’ve ever seen on any camping lantern. The parts list for our camping lantern is pretty short. One of the things that we’ll need are a battery holder of some kind. you can use either a three AAA adapter like this one or I’m gonna use an 18650 battery adapter. an LED or LEDs I’ll be using three batteries so I’m gonna use LEDs. we’ll need a piece of aluminum for a heatsink you could get some flat bar from the hardware store just whatever you have laying around. we need some kind of a switch I want to use a dimmer switch so I ordered this PWM and last but certainly not least for our diffuser we’re going to use this chocolate icecream bucket. I know some of you right now you’re thinking “dude seriously”? but I’m telling you the beam will be spectacular. This is one of the best camping hacks I know.

A good way to cut and shape aluminum is to use an angle grinder with a cutting disc and grinding disc. You can also take a regular bar of soap and press it against the cutting surface and that will prevent the aluminum chips from clogging up the blade. It will slice aluminum like a hot knife through butter for about five seconds, then you have to touch it again with the bar of soap. I prefer Dewalt grinders and the tool-less mandrels.

Hey, question. Could I substitute a constant-current regulator in place of the resistor you used? And then use a pwm the same way you did? I’m trying to control an xhp70 brightness level for a work lamp I want to build.

Awesome love it! I have turned all kinds of things into 18650 powered devices. So rewarding when you make nothing into something. Got some super bright led 3v diode’s @.3 watts noticed how bright and beam focused they was. Made a handful of 18650 flashlights for a couple of bucks. Single 18650 holder glued on a cheap switch put both on a piece of a paint stick attached resister then led in a makeshift lens. It did everything I wanted a super long lasting light and brighter than my old mini mag light "non led". Perfect for looking for things when you don’t need a spotlight even have a blue light in tackle box for nighttime fishing.
While its not as bright as fancy 18650 torches the one efficient led diode lets it last x20 longer or more. Which is what I wanted to replace camp propane lanterns. Something you can run all night without even worrying about batteries li ion is amazing! Thanks for this will try out a few plus give me an excuse to buy ice cream!
Glad that you said you can just use any 18650 light as the source. I’ve been making diffusers like this for a long time. Milk jug on the DX80 is my favorite. My son throws a light in his plastic jack-o-lantern on halloween. Really makes him visible when trick-or-treating.
