Remote Pacific Islands | Exploring by Boat | Destination Adventure
The archipelago of Haida Gwaii is remote group of over 1000 islands, most of which can only be accessed by boat. Lucky for me, I travel with a boat that is capable of some pretty awesome ocean adventures. Coming to Haida Gwaii, I knew I would be taking any chance I could to get on the water and get out to some of the spots that few people ever get to see, and this one certainly did not disappoint, but first we had to take the opportunity to visit Rose Spit.
Rose Spit is an absolutely beautiful place to visit, with an absolutely unbelievable view. There are no roads to the tip of the spit, but some people do take their vehicles, but you will see in this video the risk that comes with that decision. I am thankful to have been able to see it without risking the truck, and if youre visiting Haida Gwaii I recommend adding it to your list. On the way to Rose Spit is Toe Hill, which is another awesome stop with some glorious views and rock structures. From both of these locations you can even see the far off mountain ranges of Alaska.
Getting down to Rennell sound is a really fun trip, but it comes with a warning. The final three km of the trip will take you down the fourth Steepest hill in North America, at 25% grade. Lots of folks had warned me about taking my truck down there, but it is actually no problem at all. If it has been raining, I think the hill might not be as easy, but on the right day it can easily be done in a car. The camp spots in Rennell Sound are beautiful, and the adventures out of here are spectacular. Being on the west coast, the ocean can be incredibly dangerous here, so make sure to plan your trips out very accordingly. The fishing is very good (if you’re not me), the coastline and views are beautiful, and if you do some research you can find a fair bit of history scattered behind the tree line here.
We set out in search of an abandoned logging camp, but unfortunately it seems that there is not much left to see today. Never the less, it was a great adventure with some great company.

Great video! I hate to say it, but that looks like just a cedar that split when the loggers felled it from the stump you indicate. I have seen many dugouts and ridden in one with it’s builder. He also showed me the remains of the first one he tried to make (in the ’70s). It split because he carved it out with a chainsaw in a couple of days, and the sudden change in stress was too much. Some elders taught him to wait, and then carve slowly. That canoe had the same amount of vegetation on it, I’d say. It’s just across the strait on Dolphin Island. I can’t tell how far from the chuck you are, but it’s pretty rare to carve a canoe far from the water, unless there is an easy slope to slide it on down. It looks pretty flat there.
Lovely video, and you had good weather, too! :^)
Thanks Dustin. Incredible beauty. Love following your trips, your good humour and dedication to showing us places we never knew were so wonderful.
that is such a cool sound
What’s the music playing when showing the dugout canoe?
Where did you get your information about the Pacific and Atlantic oceans converging at the end of Rose Spit? Haida Gwaii is completely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is on the other side of the country.
Hello Dustin!
Where you ever allowed to reveal what you found on the island? I have my guess but am curious. Great stuff we all really appreciate you and your adventures
In the US we have the Smithsonian Institution… we have found that if you share with them your discovery it seems to disappear never to be seen again…
That thick moss just looks unreal to me. It looks like a fairy tale place or something!!! That cliff off the coast that you came up on was crazy beautiful too. Some great video all around bud. Sorry about the discovery you had to see and for anyone else it affects!!
That spruce you were standing next to was 100 or less years old. Spruce grow insanely quick check out holberg all the trees there are second growth
I really like the ocean views. Gramma Candy
Rennel Sound is my favorite rec site in BC.
Also the beach drive is amazing. Just don’t idle in place when you park. That’s how people sink😂
Not true with the oceans
I’m curious about the Pacific and Atlantic oceans "meeting" at the Haida Gwaii peninsula. I don’t see how that is possible at that location. I’d welcome an explanation…
your description of Toe Hill helped me learn why the basalt columns on the way to Whistler,BC, from Squamish on the Hwy99, were formed. I’ve always loved them and have taken endless pictures there. Love all your adventures!! Thanks for being so informative and a terrific videographer.
Just recently found your channel and have been loving all the videos. Just curious, how come you did not introduce your friend?
Cool place where tides collide✌️
THE TREES SO COOL!!!!!!!
At 6.50 did anyone see the rock that looked like a face?
there is no atlantic over there man come on, really dude. fucking a
At 4:31 of the video I can with all honesty say I have never seen wave slam into each other as they do in this shot that is the coolest thing ever and with all those rocks you should have a metal Detecting going on I betcha you guys would find big ole nuggets
Amazing
Trees are so majestic and resilient….just seeing those trees gave me chills❤
Shaylanna Lewis, Brent Hendron and a few others for such an isolated place. If the discovery wasn’t ancient remains I hope it brings closure for a family.
You should camp in a grain elevator when you come through saskatchewan that would be cool.
Just watched this. You’re quite the joker. (Meant in a good way). I should read all the comments to see how many people believed the whole thing about all those oceans converging off of rose spit. Lol. Good one
Wish we knew what you found
You are nowhere near the Mediterranean, Indian and Atlantic oceans let alone the Arctic. There is no geographic anomaly there.
Gotta have a flasher in front of that hoochie!
You do such beautiful work you’re so extremely talented. Your videos are some of the best things I’ve ever seen on YouTube and I seen a ton of them. God bless you and wishing you well.
👍
Hi Dustin I have heard that these unfinished canoes were due to the large population die off of the natives due to diseases transferred from the white traders. Tom in the Maritimes at the NB-NS border
👍
Good morning from 100 Mile House, did anything ever come of your discovery Dustin?
👍
Excellent adventure Dustin !!! I am pretty sure what you found there was more than a bear in an RV .. this turned out to be a big day . Great work , so much respect for the area and the people . Loved this ✌️♥️
Dustin…. just wanna say thank you so much for doing what you do in sharing your adventures…. you’ve made life more enjoyable for so many who simply see your video’s… for those who will never be able to get out there and see what’s left of God’s green earth and blue sea — thanks again my friend, and may God bless you ever more in all that you do !!! ♥ (Jesus Saves o/o/o/) 😇
Dude you are living my dream!!!
8:29 Yes, that is a cauliflower mushroom

There is a direct correlation between the videos you produce and my interest in watching them. Thanks so very much for sharing all this incredible beauty.
Awesome video!
You should go to hot springs island that’ be sweet! I know where really old totem pool is with a couple faces still in it! Really cool stop to
At first I thought you found a dead body… but who knows 🤷♀️ looking forward to the day you can share ❤
Don’t care what was in the cave (BONES)
What was in the CRAB TRAP???
I love your integrity and respect with your find…since we are new here…did anything ever come of your discovery?
What beautiful and stunning footage…I feel like I am right there too. Finding your channel has given us so much h joy and we are exploreres too..just not as much as we used to be..( getting old has its nutty issues lolol)..but we still explore where and when we can.
I love your beautiful sense of adventure.
I think you are our favorite now.
Cheers!❤❤❤
Well….now I’m really frikken curious. I’m guessing a body of some sort….perhaps with some historical significance….
That cedar tree tangle was awesome.
I wonder why people all over the world tell the fairy tale about basalt columns that were created by volcanoes. The basalt columns are the legacy of sawn-off trees, i.e. tree stumps that are millions of years old and have fossilized.
Just love when you explore haida gwaii
Is the guy with you your brother? You didn’t introduce him.😊
