Remote Pacific Islands | Exploring by Boat | Destination Adventure

The archipelago of Haida Gwaii is remote group of over 1000 islands, most of which can only be accessed by boat. Lucky for me, I travel with a boat that is capable of some pretty awesome ocean adventures. Coming to Haida Gwaii, I knew I would be taking any chance I could to get on the water and get out to some of the spots that few people ever get to see, and this one certainly did not disappoint, but first we had to take the opportunity to visit Rose Spit.

Rose Spit is an absolutely beautiful place to visit, with an absolutely unbelievable view. There are no roads to the tip of the spit, but some people do take their vehicles, but you will see in this video the risk that comes with that decision. I am thankful to have been able to see it without risking the truck, and if youre visiting Haida Gwaii I recommend adding it to your list. On the way to Rose Spit is Toe Hill, which is another awesome stop with some glorious views and rock structures. From both of these locations you can even see the far off mountain ranges of Alaska.

Getting down to Rennell sound is a really fun trip, but it comes with a warning. The final three km of the trip will take you down the fourth Steepest hill in North America, at 25% grade. Lots of folks had warned me about taking my truck down there, but it is actually no problem at all. If it has been raining, I think the hill might not be as easy, but on the right day it can easily be done in a car. The camp spots in Rennell Sound are beautiful, and the adventures out of here are spectacular. Being on the west coast, the ocean can be incredibly dangerous here, so make sure to plan your trips out very accordingly. The fishing is very good (if you’re not me), the coastline and views are beautiful, and if you do some research you can find a fair bit of history scattered behind the tree line here.

We set out in search of an abandoned logging camp, but unfortunately it seems that there is not much left to see today. Never the less, it was a great adventure with some great company.

Great video! I hate to say it, but that looks like just a cedar that split when the loggers felled it from the stump you indicate. I have seen many dugouts and ridden in one with it’s builder. He also showed me the remains of the first one he tried to make (in the ’70s). It split because he carved it out with a chainsaw in a couple of days, and the sudden change in stress was too much. Some elders taught him to wait, and then carve slowly. That canoe had the same amount of vegetation on it, I’d say. It’s just across the strait on Dolphin Island. I can’t tell how far from the chuck you are, but it’s pretty rare to carve a canoe far from the water, unless there is an easy slope to slide it on down. It looks pretty flat there.
Lovely video, and you had good weather, too! :^)

  5. @judywhaley5092 on March 19, 2025 at 1:17 am

Where did you get your information about the Pacific and Atlantic oceans converging at the end of Rose Spit? Haida Gwaii is completely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is on the other side of the country.

In the US we have the Smithsonian Institution… we have found that if you share with them your discovery it seems to disappear never to be seen again…

That thick moss just looks unreal to me. It looks like a fairy tale place or something!!! That cliff off the coast that you came up on was crazy beautiful too. Some great video all around bud. Sorry about the discovery you had to see and for anyone else it affects!!

Rennel Sound is my favorite rec site in BC.
Also the beach drive is amazing. Just don’t idle in place when you park. That’s how people sink😂

  13. @gretchennetz6152 on March 19, 2025 at 1:25 am

I’m curious about the Pacific and Atlantic oceans "meeting" at the Haida Gwaii peninsula. I don’t see how that is possible at that location. I’d welcome an explanation…

  14. @landlice48 on March 19, 2025 at 1:25 am

your description of Toe Hill helped me learn why the basalt columns on the way to Whistler,BC, from Squamish on the Hwy99, were formed. I’ve always loved them and have taken endless pictures there. Love all your adventures!! Thanks for being so informative and a terrific videographer.

Shaylanna Lewis, Brent Hendron and a few others for such an isolated place. If the discovery wasn’t ancient remains I hope it brings closure for a family.

Just watched this. You’re quite the joker. (Meant in a good way). I should read all the comments to see how many people believed the whole thing about all those oceans converging off of rose spit. Lol. Good one

You are nowhere near the Mediterranean, Indian and Atlantic oceans let alone the Arctic. There is no geographic anomaly there.

  48. @wacherwolf4519 on March 19, 2025 at 2:00 am

I wonder why people all over the world tell the fairy tale about basalt columns that were created by volcanoes. The basalt columns are the legacy of sawn-off trees, i.e. tree stumps that are millions of years old and have fossilized.
