Solo Backpacking for the First Time as a Complete Beginner
Solo Backpacking for the First Time as a Complete Beginner
I went on my first solo backpacking trip to get a taste for what it’s like, and I wanted to share the experience! It was a short and sweet trip – perfect for testing out all of my brand new gear, and getting a feel for what I’ll be able to do in the future.
The trail I ended up doing in Virginia is called Mount Rogers and Appalachian Trail Loop.

Nice.
Hi there! Could you share what camera/set up you used? Thanks!
This video is pure gold!
Keep it up! The more you go out the more you’ll feel alive. You’ll grow more content with your life. Great job man.
beautiful nature nice sharing 😊
Looking good. You are fine for more popular trails but if you start doing more advanced trails they tend to become less maintained and harder to follow. This is especially true for National Parks that by law can’t have machinery within their bounds. I say all this to mention it is a good idea to have a map and compass on hand. They weigh next to nothing and when you need them you are going to be glad you have them. I got lost once when I didn’t realize how poorly managed the trails were in one area and I definitely learned my lesson. You can also download offline maps on your phone. Nearly all smartphones sold today have GPS location on them so just makes sure to download the map before you go offline.
Awesome video mate ❤
There is a national park 30 minutes from my house that has 14,500 acres of free range/off trail backpacking wilderness with only a couple small foot traffic trails right at the beginning of the wilderness. Then the rest is just a blank canvas to explore and set up camp wherever you want to, leaving no trace of course, no camp fires either. I went 22 times last year on weekend trips and found something new each time and it brought me a new sense of happiness I had been longing for. As winter is ending now in my area, I am about to start again.
This. Was. Awesome!
You picked an amazing place to start your backpacking experience. The Grayson Highlands are one of my favorites areas to hike in Virginia! Hope to see you on the trail sometime!
I liked thatyou zoomed it
“Women’s hiking poles that the guy told me were for men”👀🤣💀
also a very beginner haven’t done my first trip yet and got a dxurson x mid tent i hope this isn’t a cannon event
call to action? sound like a programmer to me lol
Great production from all aspects. Simple, but great quality
I add in bug spray light sources etc so I think you smashed it!👍🤙💪
I thought you were going to drink the creek water without filtering it😂
Got the right backpack from the get go.
Next time you should show us inside the tent!
Love a side quest! Great video!
I thought I was prepared the first time. Many mistakes early is a good thing. Hard lessons last.
I’m sure you already know about them, but bear can keys are awesome. Really do make getting them open easier.
Hey man, I know I am late but your video really motivated my dream of going to the states and go on hiking trips, I have a huge fear of losing sight of the trail and getting lost, even though the advancements in GPS and of course- maps. I hope I will have the opportunity to go to these scenic places
Take a break and breathe bro 😅
14 light afff
👍🏕🇲🇨☕️
Think I will pick a random day to hike miles and miles away from civilation to try and live in the wild…..hmmmm…Friday The 13th sounds like a lucky day to try my quest….
Good video. Btw which hokas are those?
See I love this is shows that a backpacking trip doesn’t have to be overwhelming. I think lots of people can get bogged down in the prep and it can prevent people from just going out and doing it! You don’t need some big long adventure just a one night stay in the woods can teach you more than endless gear searching and youtube pack optimization! Great video you are inspiring me to hit the trail 🙂
This is inspiring homie. I am looking to do my first backpacking trip pretty soon. Thank you for your honest thoughts.
oh no. I can’t believe you had women’s poles! How embarrassing. You must have ovaries, now.
What backpack is that?
Great video brother!!! Inspiring!! I’m 46, just started hiking about 5 years ago, and still haven’t done my first backpack trip. The way you described the experience is fantastic and easy to grasp. God bless and safe travels my friend!!
you do not need a canister for Virginia bears. Otherwise its a nice setup. The fun is getting it dialed in over time.
Im going to go camp solo first time, kinda nervous tbh 😮😊
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this fine video. You did a fine job. Stay safe out there 🏕️. 😊
You show your backpacking; I’d like to see camping footage.
Only pack extra pair of underwear and socks.
I’m not a backpacker yet, but I do day hikes. I don’t go for miles or speed. My motto is it takes as long as it takes. I rather take my time, enjoy the surroundings, and not be in any rush to do anything. I also like to just take out my fishing pole and do some of that as a side quest too.
i get that mood almost everyday
The "being scared at night" thing. What we’ve done is slowly ease in to it. We camped on BLM land near our truck. Next step is to hiking a couple miles from the truck. Do the same for a couple days then go deeper in. Or you can plunge in like this dude hehe. We also hike in the dark a lot so that desensitizes you as well you know if you’re a city slicker.
Very informative
you walk on your toes to an extreme extent go to a physical therapist and correct it
Great video! As someone gearing up for my first overnight backpacking trip, this was super helpful and exactly what I needed. Quick question—are you using the 40L Hyperlite backpack? 7:57
Excellent video. Thanks fpr sharing. It is obvious you really researched this before setting out. You da man! I made sure to sub! Maybe I’m the squirrel?¿?? Lol
Good explanation. Thank you from South Korea. 😃
you’ll most likely not read this; but this video saved me. it LITERALLY saved me. wasn’t paying attention to anything, was midway into a very deep borderline su*cidal episode, and then this video auto-played, and i started watching; and got a random burst of motivation to go on a walk, and it ripped me out of everything. istg man i was on the edge. i am alive commenting this because of your video. thank you.
I hope the dog is ok
What a great video to stumble upon! I’m also on my own journey of exploring solo backpacking, so this was really enlightening to watch. So happy that it turned out well for your first time! You definitely put in a lot of research and work into this. LOOOOVE the witty humor 🤣
Am I the only one who freaked out at the wild bull? He’s lucky it didn’t attack
