5 Tips for Booking Campsites at Popular National Parks

As more people are spending time in the great outdoors, campsite reservations are booking fast—especially at popular national parks. The following tips can help you snag a campsite at these highly coveted locations.

1. Book early. Most national parks open up their reservations 6 months in advance. When you’re browsing sites to book, be ready to reserve and pay before the site you want gets reserved.

2. Browse cancellations. If you weren’t able to reserve your site early, don’t panic. Campsite cancellations happen all the time, and you can snag one of these spots if you stay on top of monitoring openings. There are several websites out there that track campsite cancellations; use them to find a spot at your desired campground.

3. Be flexible. With a little flexibility in your planning, you may be able to book a campsite close to the dates you’d originally targeted. You can even reserve a spot close to your desired dates, and then wait to see if other sites open up for the dates you originally wanted.

4. Be open to moving sites. If a single site isn’t available for the dates you need, check to see if there are multiple sites during that time. While this will require you to move sites during your visit, it will help you get the dates and campground you want.

5. Combo-camp. Be open to various forms of camping to make your dates and location work. Don’t be afraid to try things like boondocking, overnighting in a parking lot, or even moochdocking off a friend to make your trip come together. Flexibility and creativity can be key to camping in or near popular national parks.

Its bullshit that people reserve sites then don’t show up. A stiff financial fine should be put on them for not showing up

We just tried to book reservations today at a little known campground that is cash only and wow, they are booked through September!

Great tips! We’ve been full-time RVing in a small”ish” trailer for over a year and planning and sometimes getting sites is a full-time job 🤣
