Actually my Celestron StarSense Explorer 114LT did an amazing job early this morning watching the Lunar Eclipse. Although I’m looking now for an Equatorial scope with electric movement since I have my Celestron for some time. Celestron gave me some very good images and great times looking up at our planets, moons and other celestial bodies albeit with better lenses I bought to enhance deeper space objects. I was so sad to see my scope on your vid lol
I mean… Lets be honest… I don’t think there is even a competition against the Seestar S30 for a beginner telescope, especially for kids who are able to pick up the use of it INSTANTLY.
Aperture does not tell how detailed objects spear. Aperture dictates how much light the scope will gather. So I guess yes, if it’s brighter it will appear more detailed but depends on how bright the object is you are viewing, like faint stars compared to Venus .
Though all this information is useful. This is how algorithms work… at least this is my personal experience.
I decided I wanted a telescope to use with the kids. I didnt have hundreds of pounds to spend, so did some research (not on youtube) on beginners telescopes, got the biggest apertures I could find within budget. Bought one that has most of your red flags tbh. I didnt understand how important a finder scope was until I started using the scope at night.
Then, I started watching videos on how to use it. Which means now my algo is showing me content like this saying that I have bought a "hobby killer"
However. The actual scope bit is good enough, but where I’ve discovered the problem is the finder scope is crappy and the tripod has one of those little bar things.
So is it possible to upgrade the finderscope and get a better tripod for less than buying everything again?
I was lucky enough that the school I went to had an observatory I remember being able to see the storm on Jupiter and broad daylight we also had a radio telescope that we were allowed to use that was stationed at JPL and I got to work with JPL and map possible Rover landing sites. I was very lucky to have that in my childhood.
My first scope was worse than this redflags… it had a single lens objective. It worked like a prism instead of focusing on Jupiter you just scrolled thru the colors. It took me 30 years to get a proper scope. Now plus 15 to get the goto, pier and the good stuff.

Great tips. Another one: For optical scopes, a better-quality lower power one beats a lower-quality higher-power (and probably higher f-stop) scope. Especially since without an EQ mount, anything you’re looking at through a high power one is going to be gone from your eyepiece quick and you’ll have to keep chasing it.
Ive used my celestron 127eq since i was 14 i never found the system difficult whatsoever, the finder scope definitely can annoying but once you figure it out its easy cmonnnn
I’ve heard many times, a 6" dobsonian is the best beginner scope. After my experiences, id agree with that even though i never owned one. If unaffordable, a good 114AZ relector maybe an alternative. Way back in the 80s, my dad bought me a red Tasco 114mm reflector for Christmas. I used to love that telescope! However, it had an EQ mount and i had no idea how to use it. I never could figure it out. I sold it several years later in 92, fours years after my dad passed away.
Forward to 2001 i got back into astronomy with a Celestron Nexstar 114GT. Nice scope but pointing at zenith wss impossible and sometimes it took me a while to get it to properly find the objects. Initial setups took a little time. Sold it a few years later. Around that time, my niece bought a nice little Celestron Astro Master 114 reflector. First time i figured out how to use the EQ mount, it just clicked. Not long after, i got a used Meade 8" Schmidt Cassergrain. Super nice scope but bulky, sadly never got to use it much.
Fast forward some 20 years to today, once again, thinking about getting back into the hobby. Currently i am looking at the Seestar S50 and S30. I always wanted to try some astrophotography and was fascinated with that. However, people should know those are not necessarily designed for planets.
I’m looking at a Celestron 21061 AstroMaster 70AZ Refractor Telescope, Dark Blue from amazon but I don’t know if it well enough to get what I want from it all I need to see is moon and most likely saturn

Really good advice. There’s a corollary to the "advertises high magnification": If the picture on the box was taken by the Hubble Telescope, don’t buy it. (If it looks to good to be true, it is.)
My favorite telescope is an equatorial mount orion 130 st, best thing ever. Hobby is alive and well.

Well 50mm aperture is fine if you want to look at planets
