Me and my dad always bring a grunt call and rattlers no matter what
It works well cause we go out far into the non pressured areas

Been hunting public lands for 30 years. Learned the harder you try, the less chance of seeing deer. 90% of the time snow is on the ground where I hunt so being able to see how runs are used makes things easier. Also deer circuits change all the time, especially where I am.

The land up here is crazy managed and they do clear cuts and controlled burns quite a bit. One year a good hunting spot may not be good the following year. I used to build blinds… But now I dont. I have one tree blind I use faithfully… But if there isn’t action I will go to 2 or 3 other places in a day perching myself in a pine tree.

Never baited, never did a food plot, it’s cheating. I like the pure hunt of going in blind only relying on knowledge of the area and learning the way they’re moving while hunting. Hunting is stalking, hiding and waiting.

Also deer aren’t always so careful. They are mostly dumb with a little bit of smarts mixed in. There have been years past they were spooked at everything, but mostly they aren’t as up tight as this guy says. I’ve shot a buck next to a doe and she never ran away. Ave also yelled at deer and they just looked but never ran away. Walked up on many deer that just stand there trying to figure out what I am and not running away. Just depends on how they are feeling I guess.

I like to hunt right in the big buck bedding. I have killed a lot of big bucks by hunting in there bedding.

I put trail cameras up in the off season to see what’s going on for a few months. Makes the rest easier…

Hunt during the middle of the week on public land. The deer pattern people and know they come on the weekends. By Wednesday they know they’re in the clear. I see lots of movement this time and there is way less pressure. Come in silently and play the wind right and your chances of success increase!

I’ve noticed I’ve had better luck killing deer during snow fall an bad weather in general an when I say bad it’s mainly bc it’s in the 20s an people refuse to hunt that cold😂 during those days I learned I get more deer bc less people in the woods during the 50 degree weather there’s everyone an their brother in there I had 3 bow hunters during late antlerless firearm season wearing no orange even tho they are supposed to wear orange during any firearm season aka small game season counts..

I think they should limit the amount of people per drive
I have people near me with 30 to 40 people going in waves on small areas of public land and they’re killing off the population in high numbers and causing so much pressure
The bucks aren’t getting too big anymore because of the pressure

Very good tips! Couple other points: 1. if you feel you have a good lead on a big buck on public, if nasty weather comes in, get out there. Might be the 1 time he feels comfortable moving before dark. 2. Know the doe and how they avoid pressure, if you don’t do this on public then you’ll be the guy saying “no rut in my area this year”.
